that's the lot. i like their proposal, but just imagine a slender, 400-footer right on that spot. it'd give the city its much-needed skyline "peak".

still… i'd prefer that this colab proposal be built AND the 400-foot signature tower be build on the convention center location. if we're going to dream, might as well dream big.

Count me in as somebody else who thinks the convention center would make a great spot for a tower. The very central core is running out of room it seems. With that said, I think a tall tower in the west end of downtown would look good too. A nice tower off the beaten path, kind of like how Portland has the US Bank building off to their north.

I believe that the 8th and main tower looks taller because the third step of the spire was revamped, and the skinny part is longer.

The photo that Sawtooth took of the new Zions Bank clock in front of the new tower reminds me of the clock in front of the old Zions Bank branch that sits on 100 S Main in downtown Salt Lake City.

Anyone heard about the 4th restaurant to open in the tower, past reports said it would be a fancy Sunrise diner or something similar?

the only four i know of are:

1 - on the fly deli
2 - the grill
3 - ruth's chris
4 - flatbread pizza

i think it's the grill you're referring to. here's a snippet from the weekly:

The Grill at 8th and Main, will occupy 5,000 square feet on the second floor. Robert Godsill, owner of Cheerleaders Sports Bar & Grill in Meridian, will be opening the new location, but with a much different focus than Cheerleaders. According to the Gardner Company, developers of the tower, the Grill at 8th and Main will be an upscale, full-service restaurant.

if boise want's to really get serious about hosting conventions, it needs the kind of space that the JUMP/Simplot complex is being built on--at least. if you take a look at the footprint of convention centers in similar-sized cities, i think boise needs to build even bigger because of the appeal of the city, easy airport and interstate access, and hotel room availability and potential for growth.

in fact, i've always thought a great location would be the six blocks just south of JUMP between Myrtle, 9th, River and 11th.

those blocks would be large enough to handle delivery trucks. it's on two major downtown arteries with easy access to both the connector and vista to the airport. it'd be close to ample parking. and it's a big enough footprint to allow for future expansion.

one can dream, i suppose.
I do agree that would've been a great area. I don't know though, a 6-block convention center is super ambitious. It probably can't be done simply because of the opposition it would receive for being a "waste of money we don't have" (NOT saying that's the case, just that's what I think the public perception would be).

But here's a scenario which I don't think would be too outrageous:
  • Gardner's City Center plaza is completed.
  • Some point in the future that 6-block area would be utilized to build a new, larger arena that replaces CenturyLink and the Idaho Center out in Nampa. It could host Figure Skating Championships, US Olympic Qualifying Championships, Idaho Stampede, Idaho Steelheads, NHL/NBA exhibition games, BSU Men's BB games, and the NCAA Tournament
  • At the same time old CenturyLink Arena is renovated to 50,000 sq. ft. of modern exhibition space (Including all-glass reclad of the Grove Hotel )

Also, great photos Arch_Buff and Sawtooth! I love that tiny tiny last bit of twilight blue hour in that Zion's Bank shot.

It would be nice to see Boise attract large Conventions such as Vidcon, and something similar to Comic-con. Heck, if we could get an arena that could support an NHL or NBA team that would be just as good. But I don't see that happening at least in my lifetime. Space is definitely an issue in Boise, especially in the downtown core. the only places i can think of that could hold such places is: parcel B, and the area where BA was talking about along Capital Blvd. near Julia Davis. other then that the only option i can think of would be to build the convention center out west at the fairgrounds. and that's a luxury i do not want Garden city to have.

I love these clocks. Sorry guys for a slight diversion from the topic of this thread, but here is a pic I shot a few years ago of a clock in front of a bank in historic downtown Twin Falls.

There are some shorter bldgs on the horizon, including a 6-8 hotel, but nothing like a new tallest that I've seen. Mostly some density infill that, while not as sexy is still sorely needed here.

yeah, i don't think we'll see a new tallest for quite some time. sadly, i think the upcoming projects will be infill for the foreseeable future.

that said, we do have two 9-floor proposals (simplot HQ and the gardner transit center/office complex), a couple of 6-9 floor proposals (the river street proposals and the mystery proposal for by the owyhee plaza), and a whole lot of large 4-floor residential complexes in the works. from that standpoint it could be a nice infill year, but nothing that's going to make a major impact on the skyline.

i'd still like to see a "true" tallest built soon, ideally in the 400-foot range. but i've become a pessimist when it comes to downtown boise, even with the zion tower being built.

hello Boise!

I like this tower a lot. It looks very nice, and fits in with it's surroundings... although I do wish it was a LITTLE taller.

Forgive me for my ignorance, but is this a new tallest?

Much love from Denver

It is Boise and the state's tallest at 18 floors. Two retail floors,3 parking levels,12 office floors, and mechanical floor. It will have 4 restaurants,a gym,and state hq for Zions bank. Big opening party this Saturday with Go Go Dolls on a stage across Main street in front of building.
