Good eye. I haven't seen this yet, thanks!

I guess that would be the new LED "power ring" that was just installed in December?

2015 Juno Awards confirmed for Hamilton on March 15 at Copps Coliseum

http://www.thespec.com/news-story/430545...-hamilton-on-march-15-at-copps-coliseum/

Hamilton will host the 2015 Juno Awards.

And along with Canada's biggest annual music bash comes a week-long party with massive national media exposure and an estimated $12 million in economic benefits.

The Academy of Canadian Recording Arts and Science (CARAS) confirmed Wednesday that it has selected Hamilton to be the host city for next year's 44th annual Juno festival which will culminate in a nationally televised awards' show broadcast live from Copps Coliseum on Sunday, March 15, 2015.

The weeklong festivities include the Juno Fanfare autograph session, the Juno Songwriters' Circle, a special art show, and the Juno Cup hockey game pitting NHL oldtimers against a team of celebrity musicians, as well as a slew of concerts, parties and club dates at venues throughout the city.

Global Spectrum wants to rename Hamilton's Copps Coliseum

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/hamilton/n...name-hamilton-s-copps-coliseum-1.2490832

The company managing Copps Coliseum will approach the city next week for permission to rename the arena.

Global Spectrum will appear before Hamilton’s general issues committee Wednesday with a proposal to rename the facility.

General manager Scott Warren wouldn’t say who the naming party is, but they may be at the meeting, he said.

The company tried to keep the request under wraps. In Warren's initial request to speak to councillors, he asked that it be in camera and not made public.

The city signed an agreement with Global Spectrum last year to manage Copps Coliseum, Hamilton Place and the Molson Canadian Studio. That agreement allows Global Spectrum to pursue a naming rights partner, Warren said. But the city has to approve it.

Warren wouldn’t give any details “out of respect for the process,” he said. But he will field questions at Wednesday’s meeting.

Copps Coliseum is named after Victor Copps, a long-time mayor of Hamilton. He was the patriarch of a family well known in Hamilton politics. His daughter, Sheila, went on to become an MP and one-time deputy prime minister.

Victor Copps was beloved and respected in the community, said Larry DiIanni, a former Hamilton mayor who knew Copps.

I have no problem with renaming it.

The name feels very dated and minor league to me. No one outside of Hamilton knows Victor Copps (many in Hamilton are clueless as well). "Coliseum" is old-school. Once the Islanders move into the Barclays Center, no NBA or NHL team will play in a "coliseum". We should use xxxx Place or xxxx Centre.

Not sure if that's a good reason to stop.

I'd be happier if they kept Coliseum and then get whatever branding. Rona Colliseum. A&W Coliseum. Nations Fresh Market and Coliseum. etc.

But I'd allow Pizza Pizza SliceDome.

The word "Coliseum" is much closer to describing the building than would be a generic "Centre" or "Place" (I really dislike calling an arena "XXXX Place"). And I don't know that you want to rename the building to fit some meaningless convention just for the sake of adhering to that meaningless convention.

It does not matter that people do not know who Victor Copps is --- they know what Copps Coliseum is. Outside of the "Hamilton Tiger-Cats", maybe "Ivor Wynne Stadium", and maybe a few other terms, "Copps Coliseum" is probably the term most associated with Hamilton in the eyes of an outsider. If it were to start changing names every few years, it would become tougher to track.

The old Montreal Forum had a steady name for decades and decades. The replacement building has already undergone a name change from "Molson Centre" to "Bell Centre". The same kind of thing is true for the replacement to the Boston Garden and countless other buildings. It is very difficult to keep track of the names of all of these buildings and I find it annoying.

It's inevitable and I have no problem with a corporate name. Maybe they'll find another way to honour the former mayor (the Copps Concourse? )

I also have no problem with keeping the title word "Coliseum" because it is fairly rare to see it used, though we are likely to get a "Place" or "Centre" instead. Maybe we'll at least get an "Arena"

Remember that Copps Coliseum's full but rarely used name is the Victor K. Copps Trade Centre and Arena

Any bets on what kind of company will pay for the name? Probably a bank. Maybe Molson, as they're a major sponsor of the Bulldogs already (but please please please don't call it the Coors Light Coliseum)

Well it's hard to pass up on money from naming rights, so "Copps" has to go.

And Coliseum doesn't mesh well with that type of naming convention IMO. Rogers Coliseum, Bell Coliseum, TD Coliseum, etc. Doesn't sound good to me. Centre, Place or Arena would be better.

I haven't liked "Copps Coliseum" for quite a while now... longer before other arenas were being named Corporate Sponsor + Place/Centre.

The Moneymart Centre would get my vote. Sums up the worst of Hamilton quite nicely.

I'm guessing Rogers Coliseum. There's Rogers Centre and Rogers Place.

Rogers recently bought out Shaw in Hamilton so they have a greater presence.

Vic Copps and Lloyd Jackson should rightfully have their names taken off the horrible buildings that stand for their horrible legacies.

Rogers Place has not been built yet. There is also a Rogers Arena.

Rogers Centre, Rogers Arena, Rogers Place. How many people know where each of these are?

I don't know about the legacies, but I quite like both buildings.

I can see the argument against Jackson Square, but what makes Copps Coliseum horrible (apart from the argument that it has been somewhat poorly maintained/upgraded)?

Copps has brought a great number of great events to Hamilton that would never otherwise have taken place in this city.

FirstOntario Credit Union wants its name on Copps Coliseum

http://www.thespec.com/news-story/430913...-union-wants-its-name-on-copps-coliseum/

The Spectator has learned that the group seeking to have its name on Copps Coliseum is FirstOntario Credit Union.

Sources have confirmed the deal that will be presented to city council next week.

FirstOntario, with roots in Hamilton that stretch back to 1939, already has a significant partnership with Copps.

Last fall, the credit union took over the naming rights to the Copps box office and became the exclusive banking partner of Copps and Hamilton Place. FirstOntario is also a major sponsor of Copps' primary tenant, the Hamilton Bulldogs.

Global Spectrum, which took over operation of Copps and Hamilton Place last year, has asked to appear before the general issues committee Jan. 15. General manager Scott Warren has asked for a closed-door meeting.

Part of the city's contract with Global Spectrum allows the company to seek a sponsorship rights deal for the arena and concert venue. But council has final approval.

The Bay Street facility is named after Victor K. Copps, the patriarch of a Hamilton political dynasty who served as mayor from 1962 to 1976.

Officials with Global Spectrum say the Copps name will continue to be associated with the building.

FirstOntario is the largest financial institution with a headquarters in Hamilton, the third biggest credit union in Ontario and manages more than $2.4 billion in assets of close to 100,000 members.

It all makes sense now... FirstOntario Coliseum/Place/Centre/Arena - home of the NHL's Ontario Tigers.

Yea, I'm dreaming.
