Blanshard Street

Does anyone know what is going in on this little laneway that sits behind the Starbucks on Locke? There used to be a house there but now it is gone which makes me think something is up.

The plan is for this to be part of the "Allenby Lofts II." Brian McHattie mentioned it in one of his newsletters here.

Part of the property is to be added to the Lofts and part will go toward parking.

Blanshard(#2 & #4 ) and Poulette Street(#0) – “Allenby Lofts II” – IBI Group c/o Mr. Sergio Manchia

Application made for severances so part of McKerlie’s property can be added to the Lofts (this is a good item as it allows the building to be moved away from Poulette backyards, ) and McKerlie gets Valvasori land so Doug can have his public parking lot (45 spaces approx – although they need to issue 10+ permits for their tenants)

This needs to happen. On Dundurn too. Locke is great but it needs more life on the street at night.

For more than a decade, Locke South has apparently been split between the Locke Street Merchants Association and the Locke Street Business Improvement Association, with businesses on the street seemingly aligned with one or the other. This expansion is apparently the sign of an historic truce. At the moment, the formal Locke BIA only runs from Chatham to Homewood. Locke South technically extends from Aberdeen to King, but the amended borders would run to the Main West Esplanade BIA (Councillor McHattie has the MWE BIA listed as ""dormant as of November 2009", though the roster of official BIAs suggests that it might be wakeful... I assume that territorial marking explains why Locke BIA didn't annex the RBC).

Damn, I thought maybe I’d get to the map and somehow see Dundurn annexed by the Locke Street BIA.

I know that isn’t entirely logical, and that there is a Dundurn Street Merchants organization already, but so far as I can tell they aren’t very active. I think a lot of the little things that have been done on Locke are great, and in my opinion one Kirkendall BIA would be a great thing for the whole area.

I'm surprised the BIA doesn't already extend the entire stretch too.

Locke south of the tracks seems very different from Locke north of the tracks. Hopefully that changes, regardless of organizational boundaries.

Why would it not consider more northward? There are store front appropriate buildings exisiting beside Victoria Park already... Rocket Rollies Patio, the (now closed) Yoga studio... A perfect path to the lake.

Locke Street Festival

Locke Street Fest today was amazing despite the poor weather. Great turn out and many local vendors. Also vendors I recognised from the Winona Peach Festival came for the event. The all new coffee house which was once Locke Street Bakery opened. It is super nice! I felt like I was in the Toronto Beaches.

Just my opinion of course, but I was honestly dismayed when I saw the replacement of the Locke Street Bakery. Is the name really “Democracy”? (Am I supposed to include the asterix?) The sign is blank, asymmetrical, an unattractive colour. The big window might be attractive, except that the décor inside isn’t.

Anyway, I just didn’t think it “matches” the rest of Locke Street very well.

I believe the asterisk is in there, a la lifestyle magazine Wallpaper* (though that's a trademarked logotype more than a common term).

Or maybe it's meant to be like Barry Bonds' Hall of Fame baseball.

Obviously you're not aware of the industrial style thats quite popular. The rusted metal front is extremely trendy and was way above the my expectations. The opening garage door rocks and the exposed wood beams with skylights add to the edgy feel they were going for. It's definitely nicer than My Dog Joe.
