thank god for that 367 stradbrook proposal. those little shack houses are an embarrassment in such a great location! knew something was coming down the pipe when one of them was left so neglected that it is leaning over..

Beach???

Will the balconies really float 50 feet from the building like that? It would be Winnipeg's best public art yet if they do.

I was thinking more of delapitated East German housing blocks with patches of paint...

Big Ontario developer plans $80-M project here

Big Ontario developer plans $80-M project here

By: Murray McNeill

A major Ontario developer has purchased a parcel of land in downtown Winnipeg and plans to build two high-rise commercial/residential towers on the site as part of an estimated $80-million development.

A senior executive with Richmond Hill-based Fortress Real Capital Inc. wouldn't reveal where the property is located because the deal hasn't formally closed yet.

All Vince Petrozza would say is it's a parking lot, it's "centrally located in the downtown" and "it's really a prime property."

Petrozza, who is Fortress's chief operating officer, said the property will likely be developed in two phases and that Fortress hopes to start Phase I next year.

Well, its not the MPI lots cause they are in the SHED district. So, I really do hope its Graham Ave. That will FINALLY be a smart move for this city. Building up and collecting taxes for existing infrastructure and the air, which doesn't cost the city a penny. This will be close to Rapid Transit and would eliminate vehicles on the road in comparison of this project being build out on new land.

Congratulations Winnipeg, if this does get finalized. I think we are getting one step closer to Winnipeg actually being talked about around the Country as now becoming a Go-To city.

PS
Fortress Developments has a Twitter account (@FortressRDI) that you can follow. They actually sent out a tweet last week mentioning big news in Winnipeg to come.

The article says the development is not in the SHED, so I'm thinking this is different from the MPI lots. The fact that an Ontario developer is building with Longboat with the Glasshouse condos and now this new development, may be a sign that downtown development may be reaching a tipping point where non-local developers take the torch and run with it.

I'm wondering if this Fortress deal was hinged upon Centreventure aquiring the St. Regis, it would make sense if the lot behind turns out to be the spot.

I wondering if 219 Main St. might be the site. The property has been owned by the City and listed on their website under properties for sale for some time. I note that it is now updated as "Conditionally Sold". It fits the criteria of being a parking lot which is outside the SHED as referred to in the Free Press Article.

Not sure if there is enough room for two high rises on this lot though. Anyone know anything about what is going on with this property? The City wouldn't sell it unless there is some sort of development planned for it.

The last I heard about 219 Main was it is going to be a low rise (5 or 6 floors) commercial building with a bank on the main floor. I think they wanted a variance for a wonky floor plan/street access but I haven't seen anything since then.

another possible location is the vacant lot north of 201 Portage on Main.

It's funny, the Fortress Twitter feed said "It will be an exciting addition to the 'SHED'". But now it's not in the SHED? Maybe they got confused.

Drove past Youcube condos on Waterfront today and it appears that work has finally started. The contractor has now started forming the foundation walls.

For some reason, that doesn't make me feel very confident.
