^^ Since the late 90s, all new and refurbished arterials have included an extra 0.5m on the curb lane to accommodate bicycles and future bicycle lanes. Part of the
Cycle Edmonton plan includes actually marking these lanes, but given the sudden loss of will to fund this plan, I'm losing faith that this will happen in my lifetime.
