most of the people coming on the line already are the evergreen riders already

most of the passengers come from the bus

those going downtown will already be using the west coast express

I'm glad the Evergreen Line is likely to get underway soon. I'll keep my fingers crossed that jlousa's reported rumours are right about it starting this year.

Why not turn VCC-Clark into a major transfer point for Evergreen Line passengers. run the 84 every 6-8 minutes. Would that help leviate the Commerical Drive traffic?

That could be a good reason for the UBC line to be fast-tracked, or at least the section from VCC to the Canada Line. That way people have two direct transfer options to complete their trip into downtown.

And the latest:

Federal money is on the way for the Evergreen transit line, but we still don't know how much. Port Moody Conservative MP James Moore says the funding will be delivered within two years.

Moore says Ottawa will be negotiating with the BC Government on how much to pay.

So when will construction begin? "Very soon. I've already had conversations with Kevin Falcon, who's the Provincial Transport Minister on this project. The Evergreen Line will have the full Federal support ahead of schedule and the project will be built. And this is a huge victory for British Columbia, a huge victory for the Evergreen Skytrain extension."

The project is slated to cost 1.4 billion dollars.

One can hope. The CBSA demands are silly. Another train will benefit Canadians going to Seattle more than Seattlites going to Vancouver. Probably the Olympics is what pushed Amtrak to want to do this route. It would be a shame if it didn't go through until after the Olympics. I would love to see a success story made of that train. This is one of the proposed high-speed corridors, and a great opportunity for Canada and the US to work together.

edit: If a true high-speed run actually was built between Vancouver and Portland, you could get to Portland by Train in about 2 - 2.5 hours (~500km). California HSR will be 2:17 (according to their site) from Sacramento to LA. It's just that regular Amtrak run from Portland to Sacramento that takes 4 hours that kills ya.

If only the Liberals and the feds had this kind of cooperation with the Canada Line...

Speaking of which, Trasolini sure does sound like a broken record.

I hope the Canada line tunnel boring machine is still around.
Get it working on the Evergreen line tunnel sometime in the summer since that part of the project will take the most time to finish.
After their done that it could have enough life left to be able to begin work on the Millennium extension from Finning to Main st and the rest can be cut and cover.

This could save alot of money as they can have one team, one company, and one machine working for the next 5 years on two more lines.

It's not quite full of them, and so they can be easily circumnavigated.
Nevertheless, their presence is always apparent.

perhaps work could start based upon the province's and translink's share? or does within 2 years possibly mean 2 years at the latest and more likely sometime earlier?

No, Sweet Leilani was shipped off long, long ago to the Gulags.

It would probably be cheaper to build a new boring machine that fits the minimum dimensions of a SkyTrain tunnel. The Canada Line tunnels are much larger to accommodate the wider and taller trains....we'd need to dig more, truck more dirt away, and have more concrete for the Evergreen if we were to use Leilani.

Speaking of tbm's, Richmond's Ebco Group built a few, AFAIK, as far back as the 1980's.

Quote:
Some of the firm's major successes through the early years included constructing a 16-foot-diameter Robbins tunnel-boring machine as well as the TRIUMF cyclotron.

The $1.2 million, 90-foot long tunnel borer was used to bore the maintenance tunnel under the English Channel from France to England.

If construction were to start this year isn't a 2014 completion date a little long? I was thinking more around 2013 (2012 would be a little fast) simply because this line is 7-8 km shorter than the Canada Line, also a good portion is at grade and this line involves less tunneling.

Well, it really does depend on what type of construction work. There's a huge difference between preliminary construction and the actual construction.

One would think that public consultation and a design process is still needed.

Underpromise. Overdeliver. Also, the Canada Line is in a wider corridor and was under a strict timeline (No major construction during the Olympics).
