I thought that 1,159 ft figure was self evident in the diagram - it's not the full height of the building as shown. As far as the 1,199 ft figure, that's a number taken from the DOB application which may or may not be the final height of the tower (sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't, depending on the building). When the full construction permit is approved, they will release the final building diagram, the one we are used to seeing, that will show the full and final height.

There are already 2 Stern 900 footers in the city. This would be the tallest Stern in town, and in my mind, the closest thing to the fully built MetLife tower.

Central Park views? Check. An abundance of natural light? Check. Doorman? Check. Resort-quality amenities? Check. Honestly, once you move in there’s really no reason to ever leave Extell’s 50 West 66th Street.

The 70-story condominium building has two sides: the house, which has 84 units, and the tower with 37 units. Residents began moving in last year, but the building is still undergoing some finishing touches and has a few units that need to be completed.

Still, Janice Chang of Douglas Elliman said most buyers purchased based solely on the renderings and floor plans, as they were so taken with the possibilities.

The view from the tower units is nothing short of spectacular. Any of these homes — which range in size from two to six bedrooms and in price from $8 million to $85 million — would make for the perfect retreat for a snuggly day at home reading and watching the city’s activity go by.

“This is the best view because it’s panoramic,” Chang said while showing Commercial Observer around a recently completed, nearly 10,000-square-foot unit. “It’s a sweep from the Hudson River all the way to Central Park South. And you’re not very high, you can see all of the trees and landmarks, and up to the George Washington Bridge.”

Part of that obsession with the building comes from the plethora of amenities — all 50,000 square feet of them. Tenants can choose between an indoor and an outdoor pool, or relax in a hospitable and stunning lounge that looks and feels like the cocktail bar of a five-star resort.

Amenities also include outdoor lounge space, a full-size basketball court, a two-lane bowling alley, a media room, two children’s playrooms, and a gaming room with pinball, billiards and foosball. There is also a gym, a squash court, a steam shower and a sauna — seriously, there is no reason to ever leave the property if you don’t have to.

Construction Site For Future Tallest Building on the UWS Shut Down Due to Asbestos

Work has come to a halt at the construction site of the future tallest building on the Upper West Side due to the presence of asbestos.

A “Stop Work Order” has been placed by the New York City Department of Environmental Protection on the work connected to 77 West 66th Street, which is part of the lot where Extell Development is constructing an 86-story building.

Once built, it will be the tallest building on the Upper West Side by more than 400 feet. Extell Development filed the permits for the new 1,182-foot building this April.

“DEP issued a Stop Work Order for the entire building on July 24 after an inspection found that water‑proofing tar material containing asbestos had been disturbed during demolition,” a spokesperson for the DEP emailed West Side Rag. “Work may not resume until a cleanup scope of work for all asbestos‑containing material has been submitted and approved, and the asbestos‑containing material has been properly abated. Once those steps are complete, the stop work order would be lifted and construction may proceed.”

There is also an “Order to Stop Work” sign for the “entire building” posted to the green wall of the construction site on West 66th Street, between Columbus Avenue and Central Park West.

Extell Development did not immediately respond to WSR’s request for comment.

The new building will have 430 residential units, amenity space, roughly 25,000 square feet of retail space, and a garage with 187 parking spots, according to the permit filed by David Rothstein, an executive vice president at Extell.

Must have been cleared already. I don’t see any stop work orders online, and these construction sites usually have at least one.

This looks very similar to the model for 655 Madison. Maybe with some luck, that will be a Stern too. The demand for an 1,100 foot+ Neoclassical, limestone, Stern on Madison would be unparalleled and would far exceed that for a glass tower.

Moreover, the architect could easily incorporate large, double-height bay windows framed by copper and limestone (e.g., like the ones on the southeast corner of the facade on 520 Park) on the ten or so lower floors of office space. For that matter, 520 Fifth has at least ten stories of office space, notwithstanding its classic, stone facade.

Perhaps, Beyer is just the A.o.R., but even apart from that possibility, that firm has designed Stern-style towers.
