I made the lengthy calculation for NYC based on the 2010 census some years ago, using data at a detailed level (villages, CDPs).
At the 2010 census, there were 11,316,885 people in 1571.95 km² for New York.
I haven't done it for the 2020 census. The US Census Bureau's website has become extremely user-UNfriendly. It's almost like they do it on purpose.
If you want to check the 2020 figures, this 1571.95 km² territory is made up of (but the borders of villages, CDPs, etc may have changed since 2010):

Out of these 11,316,885 people, 48.7% lived on Long Island (New York is essentially an island, people tend to forget that), 21.6% lived in New Jersey and Staten Island, 15.6% lived on the New York State mainland, and 14.0% lived in Manhattan.
So, interestingly, in that 1572 km² area, only 14% of people still lived in the original New York City (Manhattan). For comparison, in the 1,572 km² of Paris, 22% live in the original City of Paris.
