RESORTS WORLD NEW YORK CITY BREAKS GROUND ON PHASE TWO OF $5.5 BILLION EXPANSION

Resorts World New York City today doubled down on the speed of its massive $5.5 billion first-of-its-kind integrated resort, officially breaking ground on Phase Two of the project less than 3 months after the property’s grand opening.

“In less than 3 months after opening our doors as the first casino in New York City’s history, we are already moving towards a day when the city will have a first-of-its-kind integrated resort,” said Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay, Executive Chairman of the Genting Group. “Not only are we keeping every commitment we made in our proposal to the state, but we are running well ahead of schedule in starting to build outside of our existing building.”

Elements of Phase Two that will get started after today’s groundbreaking include:

-The development of an additional 400-room hotel tower to add on to the current Hyatt Regency.

-The Kenny “The Jet” Sports and Media Complex which will open three years earlier than initially pledged and shift to the middle of the Resorts World campus to be more accessible to the entirety of the project.

-A 7,000 seat multi-purpose arena

-1,200 additional hotel rooms under the luxury Crockfords brand

-The central plaza

-A state-of-the-art parking garage

The full expansion is projected to create 10,000 jobs, including an estimated 5,000 union construction jobs, and will add 2 million square feet of new gaming, entertainment, dining, retail, and convention space to the existing one-million-square-foot property.

Resorts World expansion in NYC is adding much of what draws people to Atlantic City

When Resorts World New York City added table games to its slot machine operation at a Queens racetrack in May, Atlantic City was concerned.

But now the casino has begun a major expansion that will add a second hotel tower; a 7,000-seat arena; a sports and media complex, and additional bars and restaurants.

That's a lot of what New York residents have traditionally gone to Atlantic City to experience. And it's part of the reason the seaside resort fears the impact of Resorts World and two other new casinos that will open in the coming years.

In addition to the expansion of the existing gambling and hospitality spaces at Resorts World, Hard Rock is partnering with New York Mets owner Steve Cohen on Metropolitan Park, an $8.1 billion casino resort development with 5,000 slot machines, 375 table games, 30 poker tables, two hotel towers, 13,112 parking spaces and a 5,650-seat entertainment venue. It is to be built next to CitiField, the Mets' stadium in Queens.

And Bally's is building a $4 billion resort spanning 16 acres of parking lots and practice green area at Bally’s Golf Links at Ferry Point in the Bronx. This development will take a former landfill and transform it into the borough’s single largest private development.

Earlier this year at the East Coast Gaming Congress, held at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City, casino executives assessed the potential damage to Atlantic City from New York City casinos, and a threatened push to revive an effort to get voters to authorize casinos in parts of New Jersey other than Atlantic City.

If casinos elsewhere in the state are approved, the combined effect with three New York City casinos on Atlantic City would be "a tsunami on top of an earthquake," said George Goldhoff, president of the Casino Association of New Jersey and of Atlantic City's Hard Rock.

He predicted as many as six of the city's nine casinos could close, and annual gambling revenue could fall by $600 million to $700 million.

Atlantic City Mayor Marty Small Sr. acknowledges the threat from the three new casinos in New York City and has pledged that the city will up its game to better compete with the new offerings that will be much closer to some of Atlantic City's key customers in New York and North Jersey.

Resorts World currently offers more than 240 tables games and nearly 4,000 slot machines after the addition of 1,400 new ones on Wednesday. More table games are coming by the end of the year.

The expansion begun this week will include development of an additional 400-room hotel tower to add on to the current Hyatt Regency, and 1,200 more hotel rooms under the luxury Crockfords brand.

When fully built, the property will have 2,000 hotel rooms -- the same amount as Atlantic City's top performing casino hotels.

It also will include the Kenny “The Jet” Sports and Media Complex which will open three years earlier than initially planned, along with a 7,000 seat multi-purpose arena — slightly larger than arenas at the Hard Rock and Ocean casinos in Atlantic City.
