This tower is like a piece of the puzzle waiting to be filled in, like so many other pieces waiting to be filled in on the skyline.

Over the last two and a half years, Silverstein Properties and American Express, together with their advisors, completed a 2 million-square-foot transaction for American Express’ global headquarters at 2 WTC that will help complete the mosaic of the World Trade Center complex.

We capped off the visit with a reception at One 40, with a fantastic view of the 2 WTC site and the construction crane already hard at work.

Construction begins on World Trade Center's last office tower, housing American Express

By Christina Fan
July 9, 2026

Quote:
New York City is marking a significant milestone as American Express headquarters becomes the final commercial office building at the World Trade Center complex.

Groundbreaking on the construction begins Thursday morning, nearly 25 years after the Sept. 11 attacks destroyed the site.

The 2 World Trade Center building is going up just north of the Oculus building. It will span nearly two million square feet across 55 floors and will be built on land owned by the Port Authority under a long-term ground lease.
Quote:
The new space will accommodate up to 10,0000 workers and will be completed by 2031.

The development is expected to create more than 3,2000 jobs during the project. It will contribute $5.9 billion to the city's economy and $6.3 billion to the state, according to a news release.
Quote:
Plans for the site once called for a tower as tall as 80 stories. Companies like News Corp. and 21st Century Fox were floated as potential tenants, but nothing materialized.

The project grew even more difficult after the COVID-19 pandemic emptied offices.

Now, American Express is stepping in as the tower's sole tenant.

New York City Mayor Mamdani, NYC Council Speaker Julie Menin and Comptroller Mark Levine will attend the groundbreaking at 9:30 a.m.

It would be REALLY disappointing to have waited 25+ years to have this development watered down even more that it is now.

They basically skinned the 1 WTC antenna, BUTCHERED 3 WTC to its least aesthetic appeal; and, if the latest design is it, literally dulled 2 WTC from what a sharp and stately diamond design.

Hopefully AmEx intervenes to insist on improving the current design, which is just a square dull culmination that has no context to the rest of the complex. How persuasively miserable must Low-End-Larry be to get Norman Foster to produce something so prosaic.

^ This is the AMEX tower now, and it’s being designed and built to their specifications. The time to bitch and moan about Larry Silverstein, who has managed to finally get this tower going, has long since expired, but on today of all days especially.

I'm crying.

This is America. The promised land. The Big Show.

We have ROARED back after that awful disaster 25 years ago.

Thank you, Mr Squeri and Silverstein family.

Sincerely, The Americans.

Trying to get a better look at that model, even though we know what it looks like. I just like skyscraper models.

I'm beyond elated that 2 WTC will finally be skyward soon enough. We'll always remember what was there before, but this complex is finally turning out to be what was envisioned 2 decades ago, when all the renderings for the different towers were publicly revealed. It looks pretty gnarly tbh and will definitely earn its place as downtown's second-tallest skyscraper and supertall. Yeah, it took a long ass time to get here, but at this point, I'm just relieved it's getting closer to wrapping up. Hopefully it won't be long before 5 starts going vertical too. We've all waited patiently long enough to restore the heart of the city.

ABSOLUTELY!!!

Amex Tower AKA 2 WTC finally going vertical!! Can't wait to see it pierce the skies! Foundation is already in place, so it should climb relatively quickly!

Credit to Larry Silverstein and Amex for pushing forward with this.. NYC needs it!!

Worthy of the song...

Listening to the press conference, one of the things AMEX is most excited about the new tower is the outdoor space throughout the tower. While I know some SSP people (constantly) complain about the outdoor terraces on new towers, it's what tenants WANT, and these towers are designed for them, so they're not going anywhere.

This has really grown in me now. Look at the crown with the grid lines, I am sure it can be very playable with lighting. Imagine how many color schemes and patterns they can display on it. It will surely be the beacon in lower Manhattan like 270 Park in the midtown.

It's moments like this that are similar to when the One WTC Cornerstone was first placed in July 2004 and the first steel beam for One WTC was installed in December 2006. The first true signs of the start of something. Only this time the construction is from a capped structure that has stood dormant for nearly 15 years (since about April/May 2012 https://skyscraperpage.com/forum/showthread.php?t=130301&page=115, https://skyscraperpage.com/forum/showthread.php?t=130301&page=116) rather than from at bedrock.
