canadinns' whole business model is captive markets. whether it's sports arenas or hospitals, they want to be places where people will choose location over quality and there aren't many other good options around.

tavern united was a great location but an atrocious experience - bad food, slow service - the only reason they survived was that they were close enough to the Canada Life Centre to be a pregame spot.

I think they'll find another tenant and I think it'll be an improvement. Hope I'm not wrong

Yeah I've been there a few times and it's pretty good. Go on a weekend for brunch and get their hashbrowns. Some of the best I've ever had.

I wonder how many hashbrowns I'd need to buy for them to afford a few more workers on Sutton...

It is a great location, so I don't think we'll have to wait too long to see a much better bar/restaurant in that space.

What I'm dreading is the somewhat inevitable article where someone claims it was shut down "because of all the crime".

It definitely sounds like the Tavern was booted from the premises so i would have high hopes True North has a plan to replace it with a newer and better establishment.

TNSE used to have their offices in that building. They're now in TNS, their office is REALLY nice from what I could see.

Any info on what is in the old office space? Could that whole building (half building minus CTV) be up for a major renovation?

Tenants include Longboat Real Estate Development (head office) and the Downtown Community Safety Partnership. The fourth floor is currently vacant, to the best of my knowledge.

Whoops. Just saw your post. Agreed. It's been a long time coming. I heard a rumour that originally Cactus Club was supposed to be where Earls is in 300 Main, but ever since Earls bought out Cactus Club, they veto'd that decision.

Lake Of The Woods BrewCo is consistently the busiest establishment (restaurant/tavern) in Kenora. They have honed their model here, and I think that it should work well near a destination like the arena in Winnipeg. They have a strong appeal to the 20-30 age "evening out" crowd, and yet also to families. The craft beers are really good, and although I wouldn't call the food exceptional, it's better than most pub fare.

I've never been to their Hargrave St. Market location. How are they doing there? Is it the same model as the firehouse in Kenora? Would the Tavern United location be a step up for them?

They're permanently on the ropes. I am a fairly decent regular there. It's busy on weekdays 5pm when the offices let out, and Saturdays are okay. They seriously need some events to draw people in early in the week and Sundays.

I have been a couple of times and it is tiny. I never ordered food, but doesn’t it have a very limited menu? It must only seat 20 or so, but has the patio outside. I think it would do much better if it was a full service restaurant with actual restaurant seating capacity.

Unless there is an event at the Canadian Life Centre or it’s lunch hour on a weekday, Hargrave Street Market is always dead when I go. I don’t understand how the market survives. I can’t imagine it’s any easier for LOTW Brewing Company being located on the first floor, separated from the other establishments. On the other hand, the Kenora location is always busy every time I’ve seen it. It’s hands downs the most popular place in Kenora.

Looks like some (if not all) of the downtown tavern staff is being relocated to their other locations. I was talking to a server who worked part time at the downtown location and she is being relocated to the Tavern United in Transcona.
