Public market planned for downtown Memphis corner
Quote:
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A public food market is coming near a major Memphis landmark, as developers hope to bring new life and new food options to downtown.
Plans call for the Memphis Public Market to stretch across 20,000 square feet on the first floor of two buildings on Madison Avenue at B.B. King Boulevard.
About 24 stalls will house vendor spaces for farmers, grocers, butchers, bakers, prepared food operators, artisans, and specialty retailers, along with business incubation programs, workforce development initiatives, and more.
HiFi Memphis closed Friday on the purchase of the two vacant buildings, one built in the 1920s and the other a former bank from the 1960s. The nonprofit group is associated with the team redeveloping the historic Sterick Building across the street.
“We’re going to transform two blighted historic structures in the core of our Downtown and establish a destination that draws people from across the region,” said Stuart Harris, principal with Constellation Properties and HiFi Memphis board member.

Public markets can be found in cities across the country, like Seattle’s Pike Place Market, where they can draw visitors in the thousands or even millions.
Mersadies Burch, executive director of HiFi Memphis, said Memphis’ version would be modeled closely on Findlay Market in Cincinnati’s Over The Rhine neighborhood.
The market is meant to serve downtown residents, workers, and visitors, as well as the farmers, vendors, and chefs who will do business there.
“In other cites they become culinary tourism drivers,” Burch said.
The projected cost for the project is $30 million. There is no timetable for opening yet, but Burch said the group will begin stabilizing the buildings soon.
