Recently stumbled upon this fascinating little building: the Petrie Building in Guelph, ON. Built in 1882, it's Canada's only remaining machine-stamped, metal-clad facade. After falling into disrepair, it was restored to its original glory a few years ago:

The Gérard-D.-Lévesque building in Quebec City is undergoing a massive renovation/modernization. Construction of what was initially the city's courthouse began in 1883 until it became the Ministry of Finance in 1987. It is a gorgeous building, might actually be my favourite in the City.

I missed seeing the TO post at the beginning, love the Sud Forno and Dineen buildings (I'm sure they go by more formal names, lol) so much I've taken their pics a few times.

That last Quebec shot is spectacular, well the entire interior is - but the spectacular ceiling in the conference room and the nobleness of the room then juxtaposed with the haphasard standard issue modern teleconference phone in the middle, haha.

That QC building looks amazing. Too often, at least in Ottawa, the facade is considered heritage, but the rest of the building is demolished. The entire building, including the interior finishes and detail should be considered more often.

If they had interiors like the Quebec City building, I suspect it would be.

Not really a typical heritage restoration project. But the Senior Tower is getting a reclad. I remember it getting reclad around 1998, I think.

That's quite beautiful. When I lived in Halifax years ago, I must have walked by there many times, but have no memory of it because the city had so many that we took them for granted. Heritage there in those days was not celebrated much, and old buildings were regarded more as an impractical inconvenience, more of a burden than an asset. The city was full of badly maintained or badly renovated heritage buildings. I lived in a couple of turn of the century houses, but whatever character was left was mostly by accident or neglect. Now, I'll just add my photo of a Vancouver heritage house. Barclay Manor is from 1905, which in fact is only about 40 years newer than that Halifax house, but they feel much farther apart in time. I took the photo recently for the foggy ghostly effect. Barclay Manor was also restored; it used to have a large 1909 addition which was removed years ago.

Honestly, the government should just pay for the whole damn thing, Canada needs to take some pride in its nationally owned heritage structures.

I agree. We already fund raised through taxes. If we ask for donations for 24 Sussex, that sets a precedent for the future which could eventually turn into a Trump style "pay to play" system. Not that this particular project is. This isn't a Carney vanity project like Trump's ballroom. Carney probably doesn't care much and will likely never live there, but a future Government could.

EDIT: fwiw, Harper and Chrétien (who are arguably most responsible for the state of 24 Sussex) came up with a similar idea a few years back.

Woodstock, NB. I wish they would have left the original brick unpainted. But, as they say, don't look a gift horse in the mouth and beggars can't be choosers etc lol
