Maybe they named it for the former channel that merged into the main channel between the rock point and the north end of Portage Bridge. You can see it in this aerial photo (north is down) or on GeoOttawa 1928 photos: https://gsg.uottawa.ca/geo/airphoto1928/renamed/A1_69.jpg

The MUP that passes under Portage bridge follows roughly the original route.
