vastly substantially easier to just make it a park. the transit option would require the whole thing to be rebuilt at hella expense. stepping back not sure where that investment would fall on the list of transit capital improvement priorities, but not at the top.

Fare evasion: MTA honcho says pilot of ‘European’ enforcement model now focused on express buses

By Ethan Stark-Miller

A top MTA official said on Wednesday that the agency has shifted in its approach to piloting a new “European model” for enforcing against bus fare evasion — now testing devices to validate electronic payments mostly on express rather than local bus routes.

Q: Does the MTA plan to buy more open gangway subway cars? — Steve B., Park Slope

A: Yes! Another 80 open gangway cars are set to arrive by 2028, joining the 20 already in service on the G line. Through this fleet, we’ll learn more about customer preferences and how to maintain these trains. The lessons learned will inform upcoming car replacements on the numbered subway lines.

You might’ve heard back in March that, as part of the 2025-2029 MTA Capital Plan’s $11 billion investment in rolling stock, we’re seeking companies to build our largest-ever order of new subway cars — up to 60% of which could be open gangways.

The Request for Proposals asks for different quantity scenarios so we can learn as much about these cars as possible through the responses. While open gangways are new to the MTA, they’ve been around a long time in other transit systems, so builders are already familiar with them. – Jessie Lazarus, MTA Chief of Rolling Stock

The open gangway allows riders to seamlessly move between train cars.

Q: Where can I find the special World Cup trains? — Veronica V., Astoria

A: These wrapped trains are an ad buy from the New York and New Jersey World Cup Host Committee and the NYC Mayor’s Office. Their real-time locations are highlighted in the MTA app with a soccer ball icon. You can find them across nine different NYC subway lines, with each of the competing teams represented.

About ‘D’-arn time: MTA rolls out shiny new R211 trains on the D line, replacing 1980s-era rail cars

By Ethan Stark-Miller
Posted on July 1, 2026

D train riders are in for a serious upgrade.

The MTA on Wednesday debuted its newest trains, the R211s, on the D line. The Sixth Avenue line train is one of the system’s longest, running between Coney Island in Brooklyn and Norwood or Bedford Park in the Bronx.

The shiny new trains — which have already been rolled out on the A, C, G, and B lines as well as the Rockaway Park Shuttle and Staten Island Railway — sport a suite of modern features popular with riders. Those include 58-inch-wide doors — eight inches wider than those on previous models, digital displays with wayfinding info for ridrs, and extra spac for those with disabilities.

I think it's much cheaper than higher fare. You can pay $1.50 for ride. You must pay the fare.

Yeah, I'm aware of that. People are not listening to the bus drivers. They asked them to pay the fare or remove from the bus. Pay the fare! You cannot be sneaking on the bus anymore. You must obey the laws! PAY THE FARE! It's a law!

MTA to add elevators to five more Brooklyn subway stations with funding from congestion pricing

By Ethan Stark-Miller
Posted on July 7, 2026

The MTA is set to make five more Brooklyn subway stations accessible to wheelchair users by installing elevators, a project funded in part through congestion pricing revenue, the agency announced Monday.

The transit authority released a request for proposals (RFP) for a contractor to take on the construction — estimated to cost upwards of $100 million — on Monday. The contract will cover adding new elevators, along with needed repair work and other upgrades, at all five stations.

Well, the 3rd option is "do nothing". If you know that a subway line is the right choice, you can continue to landbank the Rockaway Branch until such time that you have funding for the subway.

Building a park puts a nail in the coffin of doing rail in the future, because our entire system in this country basically prohibits governments from ever messing with parks once they are established. Even in the best case scenario, MTA would have to find replacement parkland somewhere in NYC at a 1:1 ratio or higher to offset any removal of park space. Good luck with that.

Plus, I don't think Mamdani even sees a political benefit from greenlighting the Queensway park. The Queensway backers are outer-borough white ethnics/Cuomo voters who hate his guts. Half of them only support the park as a way to keep the subway line (and brown people) out of their neighborhoods.
