that would be epic! The black and white photo is perfect! Someone in Winnipeg should start a petition... make it happen.

Great VdQ/QC photo! Really highlights the great walkable neighbourhoods in the central city.

Sure, there needs to be a Burton Cummings mural. And it has to have his famous 1970s pornstache.

lol, yeah, but I guess in the 1960’s the bottom of the picture would have been part of the City of Lancaster, NB.

As for this great picture, Jorge Enrique does more to promote this city than the city's actual tourist board/ NB Tourism does for Saint John!

A view of St. Vital Centre, a regional mall in south Winnipeg, with downtown in the distance.

It is gratifying to learn that Famous Player's theatres are uniformly hideous across this great country.

I’ve always felt malls like this would be the perfect place to build mid rise and high rise residential housing literally on top of the mall… like who wouldn’t want to live on top of a mall? I think it would be awesome to just take an elevator down to see a movie at Silver City, or pop down the elevator to buy an outfit at Uniqlo on the way out before a night on the town.

St. Vital Centre was always considered the best mall when I was growing up in Winnipeg, even if Polo Park was a bit bigger, plus it was the closest mall to Island Lakes where I grew up. However, Portage Place was always my favourite mall, especially the liminal skywalk shops and the fountain. ⛲️

I’d love to see Portage Place one more time before it’s demolished and redeveloped, but I think I already missed my chance.

Yeah, Portage Place is gone. But there was a trashy looking Netflix movie filmed there before its demolition. "Time Cut" if you want a trip down memory lane.

I will say, Portage Place was kind of a gem and kind of sucked in equal measure. An extremely 90s pomo mall would have killed on tiktok. Not to say PP didn't need rethinking, but a lighter touch could have saved it while also correcting its flaws. Winnipeg just has a habit of preserving things in amber until exactly the point they start being cool again, then demolishing them.
