Nice projects, solid opportunity to add positive value into downtown. I really hope the state, county and city go through with removing 475 in downtown. The neighborhoods around the cultural center are all pretty nice especially East Village the connectivity with downtown could bring in some missing major retail from the area.

Early this year Chevy Commons SW of U of M’s Campus & downtown took hopefully what should be its last step to becoming Michigans 104th State Park.

Chevy Commons State Park will be connected to the 73 mile Flint River Water Trail.

EV battery materials company to construct new $175M manufacturing facility in Flint
Quote:
NanoGraf, a leading battery materials company, is set to bring a $175 million manufacturing facility to Flint’s former historic Buick City, a project that promises to create hundreds of jobs and revitalize the local economy.

U.S. Rep Dan Kildee (D-Flint Twp.) expressed enthusiasm following the U.S. Department of Energy’s announcement of a $60 million grant to NanoGraf for the construction of a new manufacturing facility.

Great to see Buick City diversifying from logistics and light manufacturing into high end high tech manufacturing.

It’s promising to see advanced manufacturing supply chain & major manufacturing taking shape in the state. The only domestic sources of nickel are being mined in Michigan as well as a controversial copper & nickel mine that
looks set to begin construction next to Porcupine Mountains State Wilderness Park. As well as opening up newly discovered & or viable ore deposits a Houghton based start up just received a grant to extract cobalt, nickel and lithium from tailings at the old Humboldt Mine in Ishpeming. The Eagle Nickel Mine and processing facility also received a grant to process the tailings as well as to become a regional hub for processing of these key minerals.

Here’s the Mlive link it would fit better in the Northern Michigan page however since Flint is the center of talk right now about major EV and microchip developments. As well as the mining & processing developments are rural developments figured might as well drop the link for greater regional economic context.

Michigan works to land mammoth $55B microchip project

Crain’s Detroit
By Kurt Negal

Quote:
Michigan officials are working to land a microchip project that could bring an up to $55 billion investment and 10,000 jobs to a Flint-area megasite, two people familiar with the effort confirmed to Crain’s.

Western Digital Technologies Inc., the San Jose, Calif.-based producer of memory and storage chips, is considering the development, which could involve several semiconductor manufacturing plants on a 1,300-acre site in Genesee County, sources said. The people spoke on condition of anonymity.

Code-named “Project Grit,” the potential development in Mundy Township near Flint would be the largest economic development project in recent state history, perhaps ever, should it materialize.

The project is dependent on billions of dollars in federal CHIPS Act funding as well as a state incentives package. The state and local contributions are expected to total more than $22 billion, sources told Crain’s. That figure includes tax abatements and local incentives. Cash grants from the state are expected to be around $1.5 billion. The CHIPS Act funding would come on top of any state and local funds.

The 10,000 jobs figure includes direct and contract employees. Another 5,000 construction jobs would also come with the project. The company is anticipated to invest between $35 billion and $55 billion over 10 years.

A decision by the Biden administration about funding the project is expected before the presidential election in November. That will trigger a final decision by the company, followed by legislative action for state incentives. Crain's inquired Tuesday with Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's administration and federal officials about the timing of the expected decision.

Crain’s also inquired with the company Tuesday.

Whitmer's office deferred comment to the MEDC. The Michigan Economic Development Corp. said it cannot comment “on potential partnerships or projects that may be underway with specific companies.”

Western Digital is one of several companies Michigan officials have been courting for the megasite. The company name was first reported by The Detroit News.

Western Digital registered to lobby in Michigan in October 2022. Its CEO, David Goeckeler, registered as a lobbyist agent on Aug. 12.

The company manufactures data storage devices based on hard disk drive and NAND flash technologies. Its customers span the gamut from personal computer and mobile phone manufacturers to automotive and industrial companies.

Western Digital (NASDAQ: WDC) had revenue for fiscal 2024, ended in June, of $13 billion, with a $798 million net loss. Consolidated gross profit increased by more than $1 billion to $2.9 billion for the fiscal year, according to financial statements. Its stock was trading around $66 per share Tuesday afternoon, up about 3% on the day.

….

The Michigan Strategic Fund approved in May a $250 million grant to prepare the megasite for development. Dubbed the Advanced Manufacturing District of Genesee County, the tract of farmland sits near Flint Bishop Airport at the city of Flint's southern edge. It has been marketed as the state’s last remaining premier megasite after Ford Motor Co. claimed one in Marshall for an electric vehicle battery plant and local opposition spoiled plans to develop one in Eagle Township, near Lansing.

….

Beyond massive investments in site infrastructure, the Whitmer administration has also rolled out initiatives aimed at job training, such as the Michigan Semiconductor Talent and Technology for Automotive Research.

State officials have also engaged universities, including Kettering and University of Michigan, regarding Project Grit, according to a source.

In August, Tyler Rossmaessler, executive director of the Flint & Genesee Economic Alliance, told Crain's that the megasite is the "best site" for a transformational investment in the state and probably the nation.

"The industry that grew up here has established great infrastructure, and that is evident when you drive through," he said, pointing to the I-75, I-69 and U.S. 23 freeways; north-south and east-west rail lines; Bishop International Airport; and "outstanding" gas, electric, water and sewer utilities. He also noted nearby Mott Community College, UM-Flint and Kettering as well as UM-Ann Arbor, Michigan State and Wayne State universities being an hour away.

"Nearly 2 million people of working age live within an hour's drive of this. So great access to talent," Rossmaessler said.

You know, I feel bad for those farmers on Hill Rd. but this is a no-brainer for Genesee County. We should all be on our hands and knees begging for this level of economic investment.

My mom went to college in Flint back in the 70's her roommate was one of our closest family friends, she lived out that way and the area south of Flint is beautiful. So I can understand concerns about getting a mega project rammed down my throat without any community feedback. That said there is such a thing as cutting off your nose despite your face.

The US 23 corridor from Brighton to Flint has been quickly growing as has the I-75 corridor from Pontiac to Flint. The land by Bishop International & the 69 - 75 interchange is bound to be a busy area one day landing a cutting edge manufacturing center which is seen as a critical piece of national infrastructure along with thousands of high paying jobs would seem to be a no brainer.

Unfortunately the project was rolled out as an election carrot and was swept up in the morass of the spin cycle that was the 2024 "discussion". PFAS is used in the manufacturing of semiconductors and as the only state that tests for PFAS we are starting to see the horrific tip of the iceberg that is the contamination left by forever chemicals. A Ford and Chrysler supplier had been dumping PFAS into the Wixom waste water system and even the Huron River on at least one occasion. It was bought by a DC venture capital firm in the mid 2010's and started cutting every corner in terms of its environmental safety standards. The state has had a program that sells treated waste as fertilizer to farms and that program has been a big player in the organic farming industry.

You can guess where this is going the state started quietly testing soil on farms that treated waste from the Wixom treatment plant ended up at and found eye wateringly high levels of PFAS. I would assume that rural lots use well water although the whole township is shown as having access to GLWA service, though local service lines may not be built out idk enough to comment further.

A new township supervisor was elected that is anti mega site so it looks like the chances of landing the new plant have gone down significantly imo but we'll see I guess. If the project is dead this is a huge missed opportunity blown by a bad roll out and self serving partisan politics.

$23 million mixed-use development to transform Grand Blanc’s Saginaw Street

Quote:
Developer Chuck SeKrenes is spearheading a $23 million project called LaPiazza, which will introduce a mix of residential, retail, and dining spaces to the area—while keeping two local favorites, The Crossbow Inn and Ziggy’s Ice Cream, as part of the plan. Spanning nearly three acres between Reid and Center roads, the development will replace several existing businesses with a modern, three-story, close to 49,000-square-foot structure. While the current buildings, including The Crossbow and Ziggy’s, will be demolished, both establishments plan to reopen within the new space, alongside two additional restaurants and three retail storefronts.

The saga continues. I get residents worried about being bowled over like what’s happening down US-23 in Milan where attractive residential areas, a mix of forest, farms and small residential neighborhoods are getting all the NIMBY’s.

An FBI shooting range in an area that has a bad rep for its prison getting two massive data centers seems like a bit much for little to negative local return.

The Schwartz Creek - Mundy TWP site at least has plans for advanced manufacturing in an area adjacent to a major international airport, freeway and rail connections within an urban corridor. My mom went to college in Flint back in the 70’s and her roommate settled down in southern Genesee it’s a beautiful area.

However the US-23 corridor from Ann Arbor to southern Genesee is a prosperous quickly growing part of the greater Detroit metro. There’s a demand for more jobs in Flint period. Giving economic growth a jump in an area that will serve Flint & its metro as well as wealthy fast growing burbs in Oakland as well as Livingston seems like a win win as long as its planned in concert with local residents.

I’ll believe it when I see it but it’s nice to see that the project isn’t dead but has potential to grow in ambition.

$40M offer to purchase Swartz Creek school for possible megasite sparks discussion

Quote:
The Flint & Genesee Economic Alliance has offered to purchase Morrish Elementary School for $40 million as part of a plan to develop an advanced manufacturing district, raising hopes and concerns within the Swartz Creek community.

The proposal was presented to the Swartz Creek Community Schools Board of Education at its Wednesday, June 25, meeting.

….

The property sits within Mundy Township, where the Alliance is working to assemble land for what it calls the Advanced Manufacturing District of Genesee County, which many in the community have come to know as the megasite.

Tyler Rossmaessler, executive director of the Flint & Genesee Economic Alliance, said the sale would allow the school district to construct a new elementary building without raising taxes.

The alliance has a $250 million grant secured from the state that will go toward the purchase, with the bulk of the funding meant for land acquisition. No company has yet been identified.

A resolution to fund the request from the Flint and Genesee Group Foundation was approved by the Michigan Strategic Fund Board on May 21, just a month after the same board approved an additional $9.2 million for the project.

The bulk of the $250 million will go toward land acquisition, as this is the Michigan Economic Development Corporation being proactive to acquire land.

However, the grant expires in 2028, Rossmaessler said during the meeting, and if the school board does not agree to the proposal, they will use the money toward something else.

….

The Alliance currently owns 1,185 acres and controls an additional 100 acres in the area and continues acquiring land as property owners’ express interest in participating in the project.

The group says it is clearing up land and preparing the site for potential development but has not announced any confirmed companies locating there.

Some residents have voiced skepticism on social media, questioning why the district would consider selling a functioning elementary school with more than 400 students in favor of an uncertain economic development project.

MSU College of Humane Medicine

Quote:
The 40,000-square-foot Charles Stewart Mott Department of Public Health facility is an extension of the College of Human Medicine’s Flint Campus, which occupies the former Flint Journal building. The expansion, made possible by a public-private partnership, will recruit 18 additional researchers and staff, which could total over 200 people, and is part of the College of Human Medicine’s continued collaboration with the city of Flint. The new researchers will focus on health equity, social determinants of health, behavioral health, healthy behaviors, chronic disease, maternal-child health, and environmental justice, among others.

“This expansion represents far more than bricks and mortar — it reflects a decade of collaboration and shared purpose between Michigan State and the people of Flint,” said Michigan State University President Kevin M. Guskiewicz, Ph.D. “Our faculty and community partners, including the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, are proving what is possible when research is done side by side with the community it serves.”

“Expanding the home of the Charles Stewart Mott Department of Public Health reflects the success of the Flint community and Spartans working together to make Flint a healthier and better place,” said Aron Sousa, dean of the College of Human Medicine. “Spartans work and live with the communities they serve. We don’t just study problems; we innovate solutions and demonstrate the effectiveness of those solutions, so what is discovered in Flint can help people across the state and the country. May this space be a beacon for equitable solutions, transformative learning, and a healthier future.”
MSU Progress in Flint

Over the past decade, the MSU College of Human Medicine Charles Stewart Mott Department of Public Health has garnered more than $200 million in external funding, including support from foundations and national grants. The funding is more than a financial milestone; it’s a reflection of the trust between researchers and the people of Flint, in part through the following programs:

The Reach Out, Stay Strong Essentials, or ROSE, program has been shown to cut postpartum depression rates in half. It prepares women for the postpartum period with a series of four educational sessions scheduled during pregnancy. The sessions focus on mental health, interpersonal relationships and community resources. Classes can be completed in an office or online.

Rx Kids, the nation’s first-ever community-wide prenatal and infant cash prescription program is now present in multiple Michigan cities and counties after starting in Flint. Rx Kids helps eliminate poverty and improve health in families that are expecting a baby. The program provides unconditional cash allowances to all pregnant moms and babies in a community. A one-time payment is made to expectant mothers in mid-pregnancy that’s followed by monthly payments for six or 12 months after birth.

The Flint Registry has provided more than 35,000 referrals to services and became recognized as a national model through the city’s water crisis. The program’s federal funding was recently renewed through 2026.

The Fruit and Vegetable Prescription Program works by increasing access and affordability to fresh fruits and vegetables for children in Genesee County. Every time a child visits the pediatrician, they receive a $15 voucher for fresh fruits and vegetables that can be redeemed several different ways.

Major milestone in recovery Flint sees population growth

Flint sees population growth for first time in 25 years

Quote:
Flint's population has grown for the first time in 25 years, according to the Michigan Growth Office.

The government organization was started in 2024 by Governor Gretchen Whitmer to encourage more people to move to the Great Lakes state.

Chief Growth Officer Hillary Doe is tasked with bringing people back to Michigan to live, start a business, or bring in talent. She says often, people forget the importance population has on the big picture.

"In particular, we noticed as well, we had an aging population that was aging faster then other states," she said.

The cause can be multiple factors, like leaving to go south for warmer weather, or the recession in 2007.

The report from 2010 shows that Michigan lost the most people in their history between 2009 and 2010.

"Even when you get job growth after economic shocks like that and you see GDP growth, it often takes even longer for populations to recover," she said.

Spring forward 10 years to the 2020 census, and Michigan made a slight leap, but still ranked among the lowest for population growth in the entire country.

But there is good news.

"The growth in our young adult population is now accelerating faster than 45 other states," Doe said. "We are top 5 in the country and that was not the case in the 2010's."

Doe says the hope is to change the trend of slow population growth by simply making the state more attractive to live in.

Her office started by taking a survey of more than 20-thousand people to see why people like the state and what they would change.

With that feedback, they have created policy recommendations like first time home buyer grants, free child care for kids 4 and younger, and more.

"We have launched the Innovation Fund, the 60 million dollar fund to invest into our entrepreneurs to help them stay here and scale their companies here," she said. "We have invested things like education, Pre-K, and community college access."

Wow, I did not see that coming. The article doesn't state how much the growth is oddly enough. Other sites are stating +.08%, or 76 people. Minuscule but still mindblowing.

UM-Flint advances $40M innovation building aimed at workforce growth, regional impact

Quote:
UM-Flint’s Board of Regents approved $40 million for Phase 2 of a new learning complex for the College of Innovation & Technology, part of a broader investment of roughly $55 million that also includes the nearly completed Phase 1 building. “This is a substantial investment and a substantial recognition that the programming planned here is important to the region,” Chris Pearson, dean of the College of Innovation & Technology, told MLive-The Flint Journal. “It’s really a statement that Flint can prepare people for the next generation of work.” Phase 2 is expected to open in 2028 and would add a 40,000-square-foot building featuring advanced instructional labs, general classrooms, collaboration areas and an open-concept “mega lab” designed to support cross-program learning.

Extremely happy to see the historic downtown location reopening Halo Burger is a Michigan institution and part of the soul of Flint. Before the foodie craze took off Halo Burger was a perennial winner of best burger in the state.

100-year-old Michigan burger chain to reopen location in this city’s downtown

Quote:
More than 100 years ago, one burger chain began humbly in the heart of a booming Michigan city to feed the fuel that was putting America on wheels.

On the bricks of Saginaw Street in downtown Flint, Halo Burger’s made its name on the state’s east side while Billy Durant and J. Dallas Dort were making some of Michigan and the nation’s first American cars — branding Flint with its nickname “Vehicle City.”

Now, Halo Burger will reopen its historic downtown Flint spot on Monday, April 27, and is planning to mark the occasion with a special celebration.

The company, which originally launched in Flint in 1923, will open for business after having been shuttered since early 2023.

To celebrate, the first 300 customers who purchase a Boston Cooler will receive a limited-edition glass featuring Halo Burger and Vernors soda.

A Halo Burger spokesperson told MLive-The Flint Journal last month that the company was targeting an April reopening after completing minor renovations at the Saginaw Street location, which was originally built as a Vernors retail store and sandwich shop in 1929.

The reopening comes after Halo Burger acquired the building, which it had previously leased, in March.

Company officials have said both Halo Burger and Cops & Doughnuts will operate inside the building, but not immediately.

The two companies announced a partnership in 2025 to bring the Clare-based bakery to Flint for the first time.

Cops & Doughnuts originated in 2009 when Clare Police Department officers chipped in to buy the 113-year-old Clare City Bakery and proceeded to open doughnut “precincts” and “substations” across Michigan.

Halo Burger served its first burger from a boxcar-style wagon on Harrison Street in downtown, according to the company.

The location at 800 Saginaw Street was an early Flint burger stand that later became Halo Burger in 1951.

Consultant recommends $63M outdoor Genesee County sports tourism complex
Quote:
A consultant is recommending that Genesee County build an outdoor sports facility and has estimated the cost at $63.3 million.

Sports Facilities Advisory LLC made the recommendation in a 64-page report, funded in part by the county Board of Commissioners, saying an outdoor sports complex for baseball, softball, soccer and other sports could operate without a subsidy within four years.

The report also studied the potential for an indoor sports complex for youth and amateur sports, but concluded that an outdoor complex would give the county a better chance at meeting tourism and economic development goals.

Perot-backed data center developer eyes Buick City site in Flint

Quote:
A high-profile development group with data center savvy and strong political ties is eyeing the former Buick City site in Flint.

Hillwood-Sterling, a joint venture between two prominent developers, is under contract to buy roughly 200 acres of the industrial brownfield site from spec builder Ashley Capital, according to two people familiar with the situation.Hillwood has been developing data centers for the past two decades, including Meta’s $1 billion hyperscale data center in Hillwood’s 27,000-acre AllianceTexas industrial park in Fort Worth, Texas.

If a data center is in play in Flint, it’s unclear who the end user would be. Other details including size and investment are also unknown at this time.

If a deal were to materialize, it would be a major change of direction for the sprawling complex that General Motors Co. abandoned in bankruptcy nearly two decades ago. The site has been synonymous with the demise of Michigan’s signature auto industry.

A spokesman for Dallas-based Hillwood Enterprises LP, run by real estate tycoon Ross Perot Jr., said he could not comment.

The Sterling Group, founded by Huntington Bank board Chair Gary Torgow, could not be reached for comment.
