Please do, as a former DFO guy I've been curious to see how this is coming along for a while.

Moncton council again weighs allowing parking on former high school sports field
Science centre builder wants site for contractor parking, storing material and equipment
Shane Magee · CBC News · Posted: Mar 17, 2026 8:02 AM ADT | Last Updated: 40 minutes ago
https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/new-brunswick/moncton-parking-lot-science-centre-9.7131340

The proposal calls for using part of the field as a road to access contractor parking and a hospital parking lot, while other parts would be for trailers, equipment and material storage. (Pomerleau/City of Moncton)

Quote:
Moncton council is again debating allowing the former Moncton high school sports field to become a parking lot, this time serving a major federal government construction project.

The proposal city council is considering calls for using the field off Church Street north of downtown to become a parking lot and staging area during construction of the nearby Atlantic Science Enterprise Centre.

The science centre under construction along Université Avenue is expected to be complete in 2032 at a cost of $600 million. The plan called for the field to be reinstated when the centre is complete.

The former field would be used to store construction material and heavy equipment, and as a parking lot for contractors. It would also be used to access a 545-space hospital parking lot.
Easily the most contentious item on city council agenda last night.

I was listening to the Moncton live the other day and I heard why this project will take so long. Once the new section is completed everyone will move there offices there. they will start to dismantle the old building piece by piece and then put an underground parking garage and then build it back up with the old materials.

Indeed;

To my understanding, the ASEC will not be completed until 2032. This seems outlandish, but the whole project is exceedingly complex. The sequential steps are:

1) - build the new laboratory annex (underway)
2) - move everything from the current building into the new building.
3) - deconstruct the old building, including the facade. All the bricks of the current front facade will be numbered and removed for storage.
4) - The new main building will be built on the footprint of the old building (but expanded to the rear and to the south)
5) - The facade will be rebuilt using the preserved brickwork.
6) - the new atrium behind the reconstructed facade will be created.
7) - the offices and educational facilities in the main building will be constructed.

Very complex work to be sure!!!

Fingers crossed for full completion at 2032... at this point, I'd be very surprised if that deadline is met.

I can share a few updates about this project... phase 1, which is the part of the building currently being erected, is about 15% complete overall, though roughly 80% of the concrete is finished. They're supposed to start the concrete pour for the 6th floor today (not sure if the weather changed those plans), aside from that only the bottom floor slab remains. Some of the DFO staff working in the existing building are still planned to move into the completed phase 1 in the first half of 2028.

Expecting things to get much busier as the weather warms up...

Council OKs former Moncton school sports field as parking, construction staging area
Site to be used during construction of federal science centre

The former sports field would be used to store construction material and heavy equipment, and as a parking lot for contractors. It would also be used to access a 545-space hospital parking lot that construction would otherwise cut off.

The vote Monday was the conclusion of a public hearing on rezoning the land that began last month. The hearing was delayed after councillors asked city staff to examine traffic concerns.

The entrance to the site is near a bridge that reduces sightlines. Initial plans only called for a stop sign at the Church Street driveway. The version approved Monday aims to prevent left turns onto Church to reduce the risk of crashes.

Jeff Boucher over at Retail Talk New Brunswick sent me this photo he took recently of the current status of the ASEC.

He did his best to try and line up his perspective to one of the pre-existing renderings we had of the building. I think he did a great job!

Not everyone is moving to the new section. A lot of employees are going to Heritage Court for an extended period of time until the old section is rebuilt and the complex is fully completed.
