I think much of that has to do with climate, at least with Northeast. My brother wanted a Tesla but decided against it because the batteries don't do well in cold weather. My father has a plug-in Prius and he complains the mileage takes a hit in the winter. Plus, gas is a lot less expensive there.

They are some of the worst cars on the road right now (transmissions made out of glass) along with Hyundai/ Kia and Jeep.
