Brunswig Building on the left, Pico House on the right.

Google Maps

When were these parapet pediments added to the Brunswig Building? I always assumed they were original to the building, but they are not present in the 1950s photo...

They were there originally as part of R B Young's design. From www.laconservancy.org:
Original cast iron detailing includes storefront columns, the stringcourses separating each floor, and decorative arched rails capping the upper floor windows. An elaborate cornice with false gable parapets completes the façades.

...

The County of Los Angeles purchased the Vickrey-Brunswig Building and the adjacent Plaza House in 1948 and renovated them for use by the Los Angeles County Civil Service Commission, County Superior Courts, Police Crime Laboratories and the County Sheriff’s offices through the mid-1970s. After enduring three decades of vacancy and deterioration, the County rehabilitated both buildings to house LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes, a Mexican and Mexican-American cultural center which opened in 2011.

The rehabilitation seismically reinforced the buildings and connected them internally, while restoring the facades and reconstructing the long-missing cornices and false gable parapets crowning the structures.
LAPL date the image below at 1910.

Hollywood at N.Van Ness circa 1970+ with VW Bug turning north: https://www.facebook.com/losangelesmemor...970sduring-the-1970s-th/712998111738456/

Pier 1 has gone into the Ralph’s market, but we see the humpback roof just over what may be part of the gas station that replaced “that Richfield”. The old Reginald Denny’s et al corner structure was long gone. Could we be seeing a part of the Richfield along the right edge of E.R.’s ebay image?

And before anyone has a hissy fit and calls in the LAPD top brass…yes, I’m the “lil’ devil” that knocked over the glass bubble gum ball machine at the gas station, forever ending an era from the past. But it was alright, I went right in and told the owner about it and all was forgiven.Of course, I had to pick up all those bloody multi-colored marbles. I think the next machine they installed was full of double-bubble packs.

um. .this might be asking too much- but

. .can anyone do an overlay using Sanborn maps that show the individual structures that were sacrificed for the freeways?

Here are the buildings on the west side of Byram St. on the 1950 Sanborn map.

loc.gov

The only three story building, as being torn down in the picture, was at 1037 - the Byram Apartments.

All the buildings up to 1045-45½ were demolished or moved in the freeway construction stage.

1033 Byram St. seen to the right of the picture is the only survivor of three that were moved.

It stands now somewhat altered and green at 5410 Hoover St.

Backing up the car into a reservoir berm again, a shot posted on NLA #1 (reference post #16745) which didn’t seem to have a source listing, looking westward over Legion Ascot racetrack. I’ve exploded and cropped the snap because we can see into the Selig complex and there’s a P.E. car running along near that Indian Village stop. Notice the two whitish dirt paths forming a “V” shape beyond the grandstands. PE had an “Ascot” stop on the route, but LA Ry also had a stretch through this Eastlake Park area that shows on maps like a pathway heading in the direction of the track or the adjacent Auto Camp that we saw.

The image from NLA 1:

The streetcar is just above the right edge of the grandstands.

Links in the threads from the original posting of another view (USC) were dead air so I’m not sure what photo started the whole inquest. Anyone know?

I don't know if this quite fits the bill, ER, but here's a graphic I made a while back that shows the street names, notable buildings, and hills as they appeared downtown on November 29, 1933.

It also includes a green overlay of the freeways that would eventually be added years later:

The image above has been greatly reduced in size, to the point where the names of the buildings are now too small to read.

The full-sized image, in which all of the text is clearly legible, can be found at the link below - it's too big, really, to post inline on the forum:

By the way, is the historicaerials.com website no more? The site is still listed on Google, but when I try to click on it I get this:

I'm getting the same message, but hopefully it's a temporary issue. I've occasionally had this issue with other sites and they've come back afterwards.

Capacola?
It seems to be a variant spelling. I found a video on Facebook titled "How Cured Pork Capocollo Is Made In Italy". The description says:

You may know it by the name of capocollo, coppa, capicola, gabagool — dozens of names to describe one Italian delicacy: a distinctive cured meat made from pork neck, easy to spot thanks to its vivid red color and beautiful marbling.

The mystery building in front of the Courthouse is the Hotel Alhambra, which was moved in the early 1920s to make way for the Hall of Justice (mentioned in John Bengtson's Blog). I also remember it being covered in NLA v1.0. Here is the Hotel Alhambra squeezed in next to Broadway tunnel. There's a close-up taken during the demolition of the tunnel at LAPL.

USCDL

It obviously survived the building of the nearby freeway, but with Historic Aerials being down, I'm not sure for how long. There's a parking garage there now.
