City and state select team to transform historic Kingsbridge Armory into community hub with 450 affordable homes

By Aaron Ginsburg
January 8, 2025

Quote:
City and state officials announced Tuesday the development team that will redevelop the century-old Kingsbridge Armory as an event space, sports field, cultural center, and 450 new affordable homes. Developed by 8th Regiment Partners LLC, a joint venture between real estate firm Maddd Equities LLC and Joy Construction, the project, dubbed El Centro Kingsbridge, is scheduled for completion in 2032.
Quote:
Designed by architect Lewis Pilcher in 1917, the Kingsbridge Armory has more than 570,000 square feet of floor space, making it the world’s largest armory. The property was used by the U.S. military until 1994 and the city took over ownership of the building in 1996.
Quote:
The project is expected to generate almost $2.6 billion in economic impact over the next three decades while creating more than 3,000 construction jobs and 360 permanent jobs.

An environmental review is slated to begin this winter, and the uniform land-use review procedure is expected to commence in mid-2025.

Construction is expected to start in 2027 and finish by 2032, as first reported by The City.

This is a huge upside for the Bronx, especially after the many years of delay. Everything is respectful to the original building.

City Council Approves Redevelopment Of Kingsbridge Armory In The Bronx

Quote:
The New York City Council has approved a redevelopment plan for the Kingsbridge Armory at 1 West Kingsbridge Road in Kingsbridge Heights, The Bronx. Led by 8th Regiment Partners in collaboration with the Northwest Bronx Community and Clergy Coalition (NWBCCC), the project aims to transform the long-vacant landmark into a mixed-use community hub. It was developed under the “Together for Kingsbridge Vision Plan” and includes extensive community input. Construction will unfold in two phases and is supported by $216 million in city, state, and federal funding.

The project is projected to generate nearly $2.9 billion in economic impact and create approximately 3,600 jobs, with a focus on local hiring and union labor under a project labor agreement. A Community Benefits Agreement includes commitments to living wages, small business protections, sustainability, and tenant protections. A Community Council, co-led by NWBCCC, will oversee programming and investment through a Community Benefit Fund established as part of the development.

“Today’s vote to realize the community’s vision for the Kingsbridge Armory is a monumental achievement for our coalition, and a powerful testament to what’s possible through sustained collaborative community leadership,” said Sandra Lobo, executive director, NWBCCC. “This project centers community priorities, leverages local assets, and ensures that Bronx workers, residents, and small businesses have access to good family-sustaining jobs, affordable space and real opportunities to build shared wealth.”

I do wish they'd skip the halfassed effort to make contextual with the red brick the new residential component and make it mostly glass to just sort of disappear. I feel like it might end up really making for an uncomfortably crowded ensemble pushed right up to the armory like that. Totally clear glass to play off the monumental glass end walls of the armory with maybe oxidized copper accents referencing the turrets would look killer.

well, they are just using off the shelf design and materials for the housing.

it looks like anything else around the the bronx and the city.

the extra effort here is in restoring the armory into an auditorium or whatever that is.

i think they did real good here.

glad the armory will get some use occassionally.
