I sure hope this hasn’t been approved. Given the context, this has to be the absolute worst proposal in the city.

A bit more detail:
Devapps: https://devapps.ottawa.ca/en/applications/D07-12-26-0010/details

The Site Plan Control application has been submitted to facilitate the development of a new shopping centre which is proposed to consist of 10 buildings, 498 vehicular parking spaces (18 accessible parking spaces and the possibility for 14 future electric vehicle charging spaces), and 30 bicycle parking spaces. Proposed uses within the shopping centre include a retail food store, pharmacy, retail stores and restaurants (including drive-through restaurants). Two two-way vehicular accesses are proposed, one off
Strandherd Drive and one off Systemhouse Street, and one right-in right-out vehicular access is proposed off Strandherd Drive.

My comment: I get the need for more retail yet I still wish we could build up on it somehow.

I've seen a power centre in Toronto that did these fancy fake building fronts and it made me want to puke. I think it's because of the 20 different stores they had so many different fronts. Maybe 4 or 5 repeated non sequentially... 3 stories tall.. all stucco with like.. fake windows and gables etc. mostly pastel colors. It was offensive.

If they actually build as shown in the renders with brick and awnings and arched windows. I agree. That is classy. I wouldn't hold my breathe though.

While I wouldn't normally cheer for a power centre this would probably go a long way in taking pressure off Innes road. Orleans is mostly expanding in one way and that is too the south.

Nice, but still kind of islands in a sea of cars. I have a feeling Phase 2 is the carrot, Phase 1 is the stick. Phase 1 doesn't seem any different from anything that's already in Orleans, so I hope they don't do a bait-and-switch later.

Better than most, bust still not great. I want to see more sidewalks between car rows and even bike lanes. I want to see the buildings along the street with entrances for pedestrians and parking at the back.

I imagine the design & materials will be dumbed down quite a bit before its constructed. I doubt we'd see pavers or cobblestone.

The city counsellor posted online about the excitement and win over this development... It looks like a typical suburban car-centric retail plaza to me. If it was a win there would be less surface parking, and and some added residential floors over the retail to make it denser and more of a mixed-used community.

It was interesting to read several comments on the facebook post saying "why can't they put residential on top of the stores"?

Of course Kitts is excited about something so bad. And this is on the planned Cumberland Transitway to boot, not that it will get built anytime soon.

Honestly. I don't know why that seems impossible in the suburbs.
