Interesting to hear. Around here it seems construction is more dominated by large firms. I would imagine the smaller builders are a bit slower (waiting for financing, contracting out more and smaller pieces of work, etc.) and maybe less predictable, but there are benefits too. Some build a good reputation and in general it's better to have a more competitive industry with a lower barrier to entry, not just a few companies. In Canada there has been a tendency to zone for very high density on a small number of parcels and I think contributes to poor economics and affordability.
