No problem. Hopefully one day I can get a decent telephoto. Also, looking forward to more life returning to downtown as we roll into a post-covid world (hopefully).

Yeah I think we're all ready for the comeback. Just saw that PoBoyz Cajun Creole Kitchen opened in the former Bijou space on SW 3rd. Didn't even know Bijou had closed! They are open for lunch but they'll have dinner soon I believe and live music.

That might warrant a trip downtown just for a meal...

Yeah, that was a bit of a heartbreaker.

One of Portland’s oldest and best breakfast restaurants has closed for good

Randall Willhite, a former football player for the Oregon Ducks, confirmed to The Oregonian/OregonLive that his tasty po’ boy cart PoBoyz is taking over the old Bijou space with a new Cajun-Creole restaurant, complete with a new stainless steel bar and a live music stage. Willhite is shooting to open in August for lunch and dinner, with breakfast to follow once the new restaurant is up and running.
Read the whole article at The Oregonian, including info on the Bijou:

Quote:
When the pandemic arrived, Bijou Cafe owner Kathleen Hagberg, 74, was already contemplating retirement. Last spring, Bijou began pivoting to takeout, joining other restaurants throughout the world. But the shift wasn’t easy, and breakfast dishes don’t typically travel well -- some of COVID-19′s first restaurant closures were brunch spots such as Helser’s and Arleta Library Cafe. Bijou went from being financially sound to bringing in less than $150 a day, which wasn’t enough to support its employees.

A quick no-look snap during a slowdown over the Fremont. I know it’s more of a NW shot, but I was more trying to capture the Ritz in context.

Perhaps we need a new “Portland Infill | South Portland” thread.

Anyways, it looks like McDonald’s is planning on moving into the vacated Wells Fargo space at 5615 S Macadam Ave. This is extraordinarily disheartening for me as I live just a few blocks away and, not to be that guy, but I worry about the kind of “trash” McDonald’s is going to attract.

How is this allowed under city code? There’s an old “drive through” ATM area but there’s absolutely no way that is going to be repurposed for the “dual lane drive through” that McDonald’s is proposing. That sounds like a full on addition of a new drive through, which shouldn’t be allowed in city limits.

Any chance this gets killed? I’d probably move if it proceeds, which sucks. I just don’t want to live near a McDonald’s.

Developer acquires SW Portland campus, plans 500 apartments

A Portland development and construction firm has been quietly acquiring property from the National University of Natural Medicine and plans to build several apartment buildings on the Southwest Portland site.

Over the past 18 months, WDC Properties has invested just under $11 million on the campus properties, including NUNM’s clinic block, administration building and general assembly building, said Mark Madden, WDC’s founder and CEO.

All told, WDC has amassed four and a quarter city blocks, Madden said. The only property left is across Interstate 405 on Naito Parkway, he said. In addition, it has adopted the Ross Island bridgehead property from ODOT, with plans to “clean it up and maintain it,” Madden said.

Excited for my Alma Mater! The current school is frozen in time from when I attended (decades ago). It needs a total demo.

FWIW, that rendering of the building is off. They clearly shrunk the football field and eliminated the stands in the picture. I hope they really think through the sighting and elevations well. Watching a fall football game at sunset in those stands could be amazing.

SW Portland sees flurry of new housing developments

Last week, the Business Journal shared details about a new multifamily housing development set to rise off Southwest Barbur Boulevard.

The Barbur Apartments, at 8205 S.W. Barbur Blvd. and 8050 S.W. Capitol Hill Rd., will consist of 150 units of affordable one-to-four bedroom housing units from nonprofit Innovative Housing Inc. The site, which has been cleared, sits just across the street from a recently renovated Safeway and near Liberty Hills Elementary School.

Given the aggressive goals for adding new housing in Oregon, including 2,500 new central city housing units by 2030, the Business Journal decided to check in on the status of some nearby housing projects underway in this popular corner of Southwest Portland.

Three notable projects, all near the Hillsdale neighborhood, stood out. Hillsdale, which is bisected by Southwest Capitol Highway, is about five miles from downtown Portland. The neighborhood is home to Ida B. Wells High School, a Basics (soon-to-be Market of Choice) grocery story, and dozens of small businesses.
