What to know about Akron’s new Innerbelt master plan

Anthony Thompson
Akron Beacon Journal
March 24, 2026

Akron officials have officially unveiled the master plan for the Innerbelt, outlining how the city could redevelop land left behind after portions of the downtown highway were removed.

The plan focuses on reconnecting neighborhoods, adding housing and guiding redevelopment in areas surrounding the former Innerbelt corridor.

The effort comes decades after construction of the Innerbelt demolished hundreds of homes and businesses, displacing residents predominantly in Black neighborhoods.

6 Technologies and Trends That Will Impact the Future of Transportation (Updated for 2026)

January 14, 2026

In 2023, I wrote about emerging trends in transportation technology that explored how railways, roadways, airways, waterways, and pipelines would shape the way we travel. Since then, we have seen some exciting shifts, with several areas accelerating quickly while others reach maturity.

Many of my predictions, including major strides in autonomous vehicles and smart communities, have stayed on track, but others, like the Hyperloop, have fallen off. In this updated article, we’ll take a fresh look at key developments in transportation technology from late 2024 through early 2026 and look for clues about what’s next.

This is a really interesting article but none of it is surprising. The amount of deaths we allow from automobiles is a national tragedy.

The Deadly Rise of Giant Trucks and S.U.V.s

"After analyzing federal and industry records, including never-before-examined data on vehicle dimensions, we found that the rise of large pickups and S.U.V.s is an important factor.

Our estimate is that about 200 to 400 pedestrians a year would not have died if vehicles had remained approximately the same size over the past quarter-century. That represents about 10 percent of the recent increase in pedestrian deaths...

But based on the best available data, the model reached a sobering estimate: The shift toward vehicles with higher hoods caused about 3,000 deaths from 2016 to 2024."
