I 376 Bridge Replacement
The Interstate 376 bridge replacement project in Pittsburgh is a unique example of innovative construction in the City of Bridges. Because the bridge carries a heavily traveled corridor leading to the Squirrel Hill Tunnel, a traditional replacement would have required shutting down the Parkway East for nearly two years. Instead, engineers constructed the new bridge adjacent to the existing structure. The new bridge has been built on a track system that will allow it to slide into place after the original bridge is imploded. As a result, the Parkway East will only need to be closed for approximately three to four weeks rather than two years. This project demonstrates how innovative engineering methods can significantly reduce disruption to the traveling public.
