Highway 40X (Southwest Grande Prairie Bypass) is expected to start construction in 2026.

The Highway 40/43 interchange looks formidable but will almost certainly be redesigned / stripped down.

The Province is really splashing out on GP. First it was Highway 43 twinning, then 43X, then 40 twinning, now 40X. At this rate it will get a full crosstown bypass before Lethbridge does.

At the very least, the EB to NB flyover ramp should be built to ensure fluidity on Highway 43. Eventually, the roundabout should also be converted to a roundabout interchange (with through lanes on an overpass).

Wonder if the Province has a timeline to complete twinning of 43 to the BC border - it’s a relatively short section left. Was originally part of the CANAMEX corridor - not sure if that is still a thing ?

And also wonder if there is a timeline for the Lethbridge bypass - possibly when Highway 3 is fully twinned ?

As I recall, twinning for the final stretch of Highway 43 was put on hold indefinitely after BC said they had no interest in following through on their end and twinning Highway 2 to Dawson Creek. AT is looking at spot improvements instead to pain points like Wembley and Beaverlodge.

I did a bit of digging and found an older version of the 40X presentation, which proposes a roundabout for the 40X/43X interchange. The last two slides are unrelated -- they show the new roundabouts being built at Bezanson and Valleyview.

^Thanks for the links foolworm.
Kind of ironic that 25 years ago the CANEMEX corridor was intended to strengthen trade with the US & Mexico and now the twinning is being touted in BC as a way to strengthen trade between Provinces.

Sometimes I wonder whether Lethbridge is too liberal for the provincial government to bother with upgrading Highways 2 & 3 to a full freeway from there to Calgary.

Politics shouldn't matter when it comes to up keep and infrastructure projects.

Had to drive up to Dawson Creek this week and finally got to use the bypass. What a great addition. Not having to drive through GP is nice. And even when staying at a hotel by the airport you can still bypass the through drive.

With Highway 16 west out of Edmonton getting upgraded to 8 and six lanes, I noticed yesturday that there is not a lot of room. The 8 lanes will need a concrete barrier. The 6 lanes can expand outward.

^ How far east are the 8 & 6 lanes going? Elk Island? Vegreville?

^ I also think that any divided highway with 6+ through lanes should straight up be grade-separated. I simply don’t think it safe for any vehicle to cross 6 lanes of traffic going at 110+ kph.

I think focus is to the west. When combined with Hwy 43, Hwy 16 also functions as the main northern gateway for Edmonton.

^^^ Thanks for sharing. With the proposed interchange at Range Road 20, could they remove all at-grade intersections between there and Hwy 779, or is there enough acreage development that another interchange would be needed? Between the two listed projects, it would be great if Hwy 16 was free flow between Edmonton and Hwy 43.

Nice to see the intersection finally being addressed. As for at grade crossings there is plenty of room to run a service road.

Probably would need another interchange. Until then the intersections will probably stay since the distance between 779 and RR20 is 10+km, which is too much of a detour. There's a big dropoff in traffic past Stony Plain so it shouldn't be too much of an issue tho. At least RR270 and 231 Street will be closed with the widening.
