A mystery location.

This pavilion-like building is supposedly in Pasadena but I'm unable to place it.

eBay

If I had to make a guess I'd say it's a religious structure (the Greek crosses / Cross Moline) but somehow I don't think it is.

Beckman Auditorium at Caltech, Pasadena - see it on GSV.

The objects that look like crosses are actually collections of six spheres hanging between the pillars and main building.

I'm still trying to figure out whether the hanging spheres serve any purpose. None of my googling has yielded any answers. Maybe they're just decorative.

I believe they are merely decorative, I've played dozens of concerts there and don't remember them lighting up. The four white circles in the aerial are fountains, BTW, though they haven't had any water in them for some years.

A mystery location.

35mm Found Photo Slide 1990s Los Angeles.

eBay

What's strange is the void in the foreground.... ... It looks like a hole where a foundation used to be.

A truly remarkable photograph if this is (in fact) Los Angeles.

ca.1890s /1900s Los Angeles, Calif. BUSINESS DISTRICT United Harness Co, Street RPPC

Main Street? ....Broadway?.....Boy standing on barrel.

I just realized the seller has additional information. (see below)

"An original circa 1907-1912 Los Angeles, Southern California business district real photo postcard showing an unpaved street lined with stores…. “United Harness Company” on corner (2-3 story brick / Mason building on corner). Next is the M. Fleisher & Co. grain business. A telephone company building further down….

Building in left foreground is also known as the “Baker & Herron” building (before or after the harness business)."

This looks like LaBrea a little north of Wilshire (just guessing because of the style building and Ficus's which i remember we're all on LaBrea). At first i thought it was where Brea Bakery was located. But after a little digging this was/is 8828 Sunset Blvd. Rama Garden had a write up in the LA times in 1987 which narrowed it down. Also the void is a truck bed, you can see the tire hump.

In addition to the United Harness store at 652 Main Street in LA that Lorendoc found, there were other locations as well:

Jun 26, 1908, San Francisco Examiner @ Newspapers.com

After no little poking around, I discovered the ebay photo shows Santa Maria, CA. There are differences between the photo and this image,
but they must show the same building:

Sep 30, 1905, Santa Maria Times @ Newspapers.com

Plus there's this about Fleisher's grain business:

Jul 28, 1906, Santa Maria Times @ Newspapers.com

The Masonic Temple is at the bottom on the SWC of Church Street (along the bottom) and Broadway (along the right edge):

Thanks for the clarification, Flyingwedge.

This is the first time I've seen the parking lot for the Malibu Fishing Pier on the east side PCH.

It's probably Gorman, CA?

Gorman is an unincorporated community in northwestern Los Angeles County, California, United States. It is located in Peace Valley along Interstate 5 south of the Tejon Pass, which links Southern California with the San Joaquin Valley and Northern California.

Gorman is the red dot in the upper left corner of this outline of Los Angeles County.

Thanks Scotty B....If you don't mind me asking, what instrument do you play?

Added later:

The bulbous criuciform shape of the. .um. .'doo-hickeys' are inside as well.

I also read that the mesh tent-like ceiling has twinkling lights like stars above it. (love it)

I want to go there and see a concert.

The Beckman Auditorium is closed for the remainder of the 2025-26 academic year and into the fall for maintenance and equipment repair, so you'll have to wait a while.
