Yeah, the prices on some of those older models have gone crazy over the years. Once certain puzzle 3D sets go out of production, they suddenly turn into collector items and the value jumps way above the original retail price.

I’ve seen the same thing with a few architecture models that were around $20–30 when they came out and now sell for three or four times that if the box is still complete. The boxes really matter for collectors unfortunately.

If you’re curious about how the market for these models evolved and the different types that exist now, there’s a pretty good overview here. Some of the newer designs are actually much sturdier than the early ones too.
