Could a Tunnel Between Lanai and Maui be Constructed?

From what I understand, the Au'au Channel is about 8 to 9 miles wide with a depth of about 250 feet. On top of this, there is a ferry service connecting Maui and Lanai with a travel time of one hour. A bridge might be impractical from an environmental standpoint due to the coral reefs located there, but would a bored tunnel be a practical solution? What are your opinions on the possibility of a bored tunnel similar to the Chunnel between Maui and Lanai and how could sea level rise be factored into such a project?

Lanai only has 3,000 residents. So...no. Unless there is some hope to cram 1 million people on it.

Major civil projects have to be justified economically. This wouldn't even come close.

Well to be fair, the Faroe Islands are well known for their extensive tunnel network, connecting a combined population of less than 55,000 to each other. That being said most of their undersea tunnels are under a couple miles in length, so… apples to oranges.

Now, in some alternate reality if Oahu’s and Lanai’s geographical locations were switched with each other, then I could see something connecting Oahu with Maui… but alas, here we are in THIS reality.
