The north end ROW and south end rail cut might be okay long-distance passenger or commuter rail but I don't think they're as attractive as a corridor along a street like Robie. They don't connect well to transit hubs or other destinations and the population close to the line is low (in part because it's ~0 when the line runs along the water).

The north end corridor perhaps could have been connected to the Cogswell development.

Google Maps shows that rail lines exist all the way along the edge of that site and go along the harborfront until just past Duffus St, so the Africville concerns should be nonexistent. They used to go all the way to Karlsen's wharf near the present-day casino up until the 1960s. Their former ROW alongside the Shipyard and Dockyard has now become parking.

I'm just thinking that it's a different political environment today, than when rail lines ran through the residential area (before Africville was removed). There was also a city dump next door - which also detracted from quality of life for the residents.

Now it's kind of a park and memorial site, and a new rail line might be seen as being disprespectful, though if it were LRT, a stop could be added to actually help bring people there.

Just a thought, based upon the talk a few years ago when the govt was looking into possibilities of building a replacement MacKay bridge beside the existing one. A compensation package was being sought, IIRC, but I don't know where it went from there as I haven't really followed it.

"Compensation" for past alleged misdeeds will always be raised by those so inclined but that has nothing to do with this.
