Smile NEW YORK | Flatiron Building | 285 feet/86.9 M | 22 FLOORS | 1902

The Flatiron Building, state of the art at the time, built in 1902 making it one of the oldest skyscrapers in New York that still stands.

I didn't know this thread existed. Yep, it is a jewel that is often forgotten yet it was once the tallest building in the city at one point.

^ I actually didn't either. But I saw the great pics on flickr and decided to post them, and found this thread, (realized only one post was here).

This is a nice landmark of New York.
How much floor space is in that building anyway? It seems like you could barely fit through the entrance.

Dear God, I'd love to have one of the "point" offices in the Flatiron Building.

Probably a better use than an office. If that was my office I probably would not get much work done.

By the way do not forget to credit Danial Burnham with giving New York City this unique structure.

"23-skiddoo!" (supposedly this phrase was uttered by Police to shoo away men who watched women's skirts get blown up by the gusts of winds that bounced off this building which is located at 23rd street, Fifth Ave. and Broadway).

Dubai and co can build all the super talls they want, but there will always be only one flatiron building. I'd give anything to set up shop OR live in those point offices. A classic.

^ The question is does Dubai have any angular roads or intersections like NYC or even London. They're just building stuff that's popping out of the ground. In the famous words of Calvert Vaux ('Nature First Second, and Third, Architecture After A While'). In my opinion roads and city planning counts as nature.

Agreed, but we don't need to bring Dubai into this.

Also can't they install some kind of air conditioning system in there? So they can get rid of those boxes that hang from the windows.

NYC’s iconic Flatiron Building will get bathed in lights for first time in 123-year history

By Steve Cuozzo
Aug. 4, 2025

Quote:
Manhattan’s iconic Flatiron Building, shrouded in a century of soot and decades of scaffolding, will finally see the light.

The triangular landmark – the Big Apple’s first skyscraper at the juncture of Fifth Avenue, Broadway and East 23rd Street – will glow top and bottom for the first time in its 123-year history when the former office building reopens later this year as luxury condo apartments, Realty Check has learned.

The exterior lighting scheme, shown for the first time in a rendering obtained exclusively by Realty Check, won the blessing of the Landmarks Preservation Commission for the illumination by design studio L’Observatoire International.

The crowning five floors of the 24-story, 307-foot-tall structure, designed by turn-of-the-20th Century architect Daniel Burnham, will shine brightly at night – as will lower floors whose decorative features have been painstakingly restored.

.........its moody profile will give way to an LED shine, joining neighboring landmarks such as the New York Life, Metropolitan Life and Con Ed towers.

The new lighting caps a restoration of the Beaux-Art limestone, brick and terra cotta facade that also includes the installation of 1,000 new windows. Studio Sofield is designing the new residences, which are to be marketed by Corcoran Sunshine Group.
