So that's the reasoning behind the single dark stripe on the sides of the Envie. It's an homage to the fascia around the Ottawa Little Theatre!

Anybody else heard that a tower may be coming on the LCBO site?

We better be careful about not having too many towers next to the market area. If we put the market into a giant shadow, we could destroy the attractiveness of the area. In the shoulder seasons, sunlight is needed to make patios comfortable.

No, but I assume that it's just a matter of time.

Just not sure the culture in front of Rideau LCBO is the same as what this tweet is implying.

Yes, it has been assumed since the LCBO was built, but a third party told me the other day that an employee there had told him that an announcement was coming soon.

Good point though a condo building on the LCBO won't change much in terms of shade, when you consider what's being built on the former Metro site will "take care of that" already.

The LCBO site is a perfect opportunity for a condo tower exactly the same height as Claridge Royale, in a completely different style, to be stuck to the side of the East tower of Claridge Royale. Don't mess this up Ottawa!

It looks like the LCBO site is owned by the same developers as the AC Marriott and Major building proposal:

Awesome. Love their work so far. This corner presents of fantastic opportunity (if only we can move the truck traffic out of downtown).

The Market is not going to be in a "giant shadow".

Rideau Mcdonalds got a profile in the Toronto Star.

https://www.thestar.com/news/canada/2023...s-became-a-symbol-of-downtown-decay.html

Behind a paywall, here is the only part I can read.

OTTAWA—In early 2019, during the final months of Charles Bordeleau’s seven-year term as Ottawa police chief, an inspector for the city’s downtown core came to him with a problem: Things were getting out of hand at the McDonald’s, the inspector told him. He didn’t have to say which one. It was long past time for an intervention.

For years, the 24-hour fast-food restaurant on Rideau Street, a main drag in the heart of downtown Ottawa, had been a last stop for bar-district leavers seeking greasy fare to soak up the booze. At any time of day, the McDonald’s was a wild card, but after midnight it could be pure chaos. It smelled of French fries, beer breath and warm bodies coated in dance-club sweat. Often, there was no discernible lineup in front of the service counter, just a mosh pit of people hungry for cheeseburgers.

If the old Freiman's (HBC) is torn down, this is what we could do with the heritage façades.

Remember, it's not just Freiman's but the Freiman Mall (built in the 1980s when HBC expanded the building) which took with it Freiman Street (Mosgrove) and two heritage façades.

Except there are view planes affecting the area because of NCC/Parliament, so even if they conserve the heritage facade and build on top, the "glass" building on top probably couldn't be higher than like 10 stories... And the floorplates would be so wide that only offices would make sense there (and office space is not entirely in demand right now).

Certainly can't get anything that tall, but a couple 20 floor towers would be within the height limits. They could be set back in the middle of the blocks to reduce their prominence from street level.

Right on!!! Let's make a non descript glass tower the focal point of Rideau Street views instead of the Chateau and Parliament. [End of sarcasm]

Don't get me wrong, I'd prefer keeping the hunan scaled heritage buildings as is, but realistically, we'll see towers here. Just hoping they do it well and we don't end up with another solid block of 27 floor towers.

The Southern Chiefs Organization (SCO) is transforming the six-storey, 655,000-square-foot historic Hudson’s Bay Company Building in downtown Winnipeg. The revitalization of the historic retail space into a multi-use building will revive downtown Winnipeg and exemplifies both economic and social reconciliation.

The $310 million project features over 373 affordable residential units, each unit will have a view out of the historic façade or into the newly imagined atrium (which is the size of an NHL ice rink), hosting unique designs inspired by all 34 SCO First Nation communities. The building will also provide office and retail space for First Nations entrepreneurs.
