I hope it’s real brick they are using. Probably about the best design we can expect from them.

Looks like construction is about to start…

Nice! It'll be good to have something else going up in western downtown as Continental and UTSA finish up.

https://www.bizjournals.com/sanantonio/news/2024/11/18/groundbreaking-residence-inn.html
This has officially broken ground as of today, will be interesting to see how it blends in when its all said and done.

"A long-anticipated hotel development has started to turn dirt in the urban core. Atlanta hotel investor Peachtree Group and Austin-based real estate firm Merritt Development Group have broken ground on a Residence Inn by Marriott Hotel at 100 N. Main Ave. The downtown hotel, which will sit across the street from Main Plaza, will rise to 10 stories and add 171 rooms to the market. The project was initially estimated to have a $58 million price tag, and the development team recently received a $24.7 million construction loan to kick things off.The hotel's amenities include an on-site fitness center, flexible meeting spaces and a Caribou Coffee...Construction is expected to finish in the second quarter of 2026."

^^ From the article in the link. The final design appears to be the one we've seen before. Here's a slightly larger image of it. It's not amazing, but I'm not complaining.

It only just crosses the threshold of adequacy, and that's being charitable.

Another disposable building like the Hampton Inn or Embassy Suites. Anyone want to take a bet whether any of those buildings are still here in 50 years?

It’ll be nice to one day get a suite room that faces Commerce with those huge floor-to-ceiling windows for a Fiesta parade or during a big weekend event like a San Japan or just to watch the SAGA light show. I imagine if there is ever a 50 or 70 story (one can dream!!!) it would probably be along Commerce with some kind of housing focus, either on an empty lot of maybe knock down a low rise in the area.

Now we just need some news on whatever that building is supposed to be in the render that’s where the Western Boots/Penners is located. I heard a Margaritaville hotel?

Honestly... this is the same building more or less that they put up in every city. Austin's is just as horrendous. thankfully this isn't next to the Alamo. I'd say thankfully its not next to Hemisfair, but that f***ing 10 story monstrosity of an apartment building they're putting up kills that statement.

For this location, this building is fine. I certainly don't love it, but it could have been much worse. It's only 10 stories and it's about as good as cheap construction is going to get. It's not ugly, it's not blue glass, it's not a plain box... I'll happily take it as a slightly above average infill project.

What's up with the building in the background on the right? It's showing it has like 5 extra floors...is something gonna be built on that site or is that just for looks?

I believe that's an active proposal, but I don't know the name of it.

The same developer Merritt had listed a "Margaritaville Riverwalk Hotel" on their website earlier in the year (around when news of this project first broke). It was located on the site that is depicted in that render, but all details are now unavailable. I suppose that is still a site they have interest in for another hotel, but it must be in the very early stages (assuming it is still active)

Hopefully soon! That boot store has been having a 'going out of business' sale for the past three years...

Nice reporting, Raul.

Is the crane at full height, or will it rise once?

I'm not sure, but the floor to ceiling heights in hotels are not much so maybe this is the full height of the crane since the building is only going 10 floors.
