My guess is that the waterway is the Tennessee-Tombigbee Canal. I have not traveled on it but I did work nearby on towboats on the Tennessee River. The canal was built at great expense in the 1970s and 1980s but has never carried much barge traffic.

I am looking at a map of this area and didn't realize that the Tennessee River forms the edge of Mississippi for a distance of about 15 miles. I incorrectly assumed that all of that was Alabama.

I have also driven the Natchez Trace Parkway between Nashville and Jackson, MS. It crosses the Tennessee River on its own bridge close to this area. I seem to remember the terrain getting flatter in Mississippi. It's relatively hilly in Alabama and Tennessee. The parkway parallels the shore of a lake as it approaches Jackson.
