Although in my opinion this should be the case in all neighborhoods, areas like Gastown and Strathcona should have simple guidelines that say all new buildings must faithfully mimic older architectural styles. People care about the neighborhood looking old, not that the individual bricks are from the 1800s.

I've been inside many a old building slated for development that are still empty today (the two I'm thinking of have been vacant for 5-6 years by now), and the list of upgrades required to get it up to snuff would be insane. The biggest thing is usually fire code and exit related. Imagine gutting and expanding elevator shafts and stairways.
