That may be true of the people on this forum, but in my experience the people I talk to in real life just call all our grade separated lines "Skytrain" whether it's above or below ground.

Translink considers the Canada Line to be part of the SkyTrain network. Anyone who believes otherwise is factually wrong and running on vibes.

Bear in mind the WCE is not SkyTrain and is managed differently so not all Translink rail transit is SkyTrain, but the Canada Line very much is part of the SkyTrain network.

I guess the real question for this thread (given it's about the Surrey-Langley SkyTrain Extension and not about the naming of light rail rapid transit in Metro Vancouver) is if transit nerds will call this new extension "SkyTrain" or not.

It's literally an existing SkyTrain but longer, so... yes?

Sorry, that was a too-subtle hint that maybe all this talk about what the name of the system is isn't really on topic for this thread.

LBH, this entire thread will keep going off-topic until the extension's finally shovel-ready.

At what point can we say that this project is “officially” U/C?

It seems that a lot of work is already underway.

As a side note - I don't think the Canada Line actually uses "SkyTrain" logos or branding on the vehicles or in the stations - at least not prominently.

My guess is that TransLink did not license the rights to use those trademarks to InTransitBC in the Concession Agreement.

That could be because at law, a trademark indicates the source of goods or services, and maybe TransLink did not want any confusion as to who the operator of the Canada Line is (i.e. not TransLink) in case it ended up being a sh!tshow.

The other factor would be that if TransLink licensed the SkyTrain mark to InTransitBC, InTransitBC would have to footnote each use of the mark with an asterisk and a note "Used under licence from TransLink".

OMG, let's hope that we spill less ink about that topic in this thread than we did in the Broadway extension thread...

I just drove from Willowbrook to 176th down Fraser Highway and it's definitely shovel-ready. The White Spot at Willowbrook is gone, there are three cranes set up near Fraser and 184th, they've started closing lanes between 184th and 176th...

nice. good to see this project moving ahead. im a big fan of SkyTrain and i am glad we have made the right choice consistantly by going with it vs LRT.

if i remember correctly, they wanted LRT for the original Expo, Millennium, Canada, Evergreen, Broadway, Langley. and we have consistently made the right choice. hopefully we keep doing it. its proven a great technology for us in the GVRD.

I don't get why they always suggest light rail, I get that they wanna go back to the good old days with trams but it always gets shot down for the obvious choice of skytrain. It's almost like the ends of skytrain lines and B-Line/RapidBus routes become hints of a skytrain expansion.
