I was just reading this article

The part that blew me away is that they are raising the roof of the Centre Block by 5m to accommodate mechanical.

And this is the accompanying image. Can anyone see the difference? I guess that's the point.

The Mechanical penthouse added to Union Station looks ridiculous. That and the side addition makes a true restoration of a full building look like facadism.

At one point, it looked like they were going to hide it behind a faux mansard roof, but they changed their mind of something:

The past week or so they've started using the new lighting on the east and west blocks.

The West Block lighting doesn’t look any different to me…what’s changed?

I never noticed the Senate mechanical penthouse until someone on this forum pointed out how it was the worst thing in the world, and now I still don't notice it.

That might have been me. I find it quite jarring. I wish they would have added a faux copper mansard roof. The addition also makes it look like the Rideau elevation was part of a facadism project.

As for the lighting, I imagine the West Block's lighting was done with the rehabilitation. East might be new (?)

Yea it was likely installed during the rehab, but from what I've seen it wasn't consistently turned on until the past couple weeks. They had been testing occasionally over the past couple years but it was only ever for a night or two at a time.

Both the west and east were previously lit only by the globe lights at ground level, now they both have feature lighting for windows and towers as well as internal lighting in the towers (red/orange glow).

That lighting looks sick! So many beautiful historic buildings in Ottawa without the lighting they deserve. This is a great addition though. Pretty much every building on Sparks could use a similar upgrade.

Some work happening behind the Supreme Court.
Just rip out this failure of a fountain and plant grass already.

Don't worry they will pave over some grass or block off/rent something for them. They couldn't possibly walk to the LRT.

Or we could rehabilitate the fountain?

Also, are we spending $3M on masonry repairs just before we spend $1B on full upgrades? (again, assuming Supreme Court will move to Justice when Justice is finished)

I would love to see some kind of interpretive centre for the SC / Justice Museum built underneath that semi circular terrace, with that fountain either refurbished or replaced by a glass structure that could be the entrance. With windows out to the river it could be a really spectacular venue, part of a string of attractions stretching from the new Parliament Hill visitors centre to the heating plant terrace and beyond towards Richmond Landing and Zibi. A far more pleasant pedestrian route than Car-federation Boulevard.

I am strongly of the view that the name "Confederation Boulevard" needs to be suffocated while it sleeps.

How busy are the parking lots on the Hill. I guess busier now with all the construction workers.

I think they are moving to the West Memorial Building, which was Veterans Affairs.

One thing I wanted to throw into the mix is that when Adisoke opens, Library and Archives Canada will be vacating 395 Wellington which is the next building over on Confederation Blvd. from the Supreme Court.

There will potential to do something with that as well, though not sure if anyone is seriously thinking about what yet.

For rehab or forever? Adisoke's LAC space is nowhere near as large as the OG.

Forever, I would think.

It wouldn't be logical to keep any public-facing services there, plus they've built more state-of-the-art storage space in Gatineau recently.

It doesn't make sense to use prime space in the heart of the country's capital to store paper.

So the library aspect is moving to Adisoke, and the office workers (2 to 3 days a week) will be crammed in some other tower I guess?
