In the photo the last elevated span of the existing bridge is the lighter coloured pavement - the small bit of darker pavement you can see just at the lower left corner of the photo is on an embankment. You can see the pedestrian stairs leading down from the end of the embankment to the ground level beneath the bridge.
The obvious way to transition traffic to the new bridge will be to widen the north side of the existing embankment to the level of the new elevated section and then pave it and move the traffic over to it. That can all be done without touching the old elevated sections. Once that's done, they can start removing the old elevated sections, and probably the south side of the embankment as well.
