I guess it’s not bad as far as artificially created suburban “downtowns” go. I was just there this morning and sure there are people around but there are many periods where it’s pretty dead as well. It’s quite dependent upon events at the Maison de la culture or Centre Slush Puppie or the square and stage at Place de la Cité and doesn’t really have any sustained vibrancy outside of that.

What needs to happen is this pivotal prime piece of land needs to be developed:

It sits in the heart of the whole thing, between the Maison de la culture and library complex and the red brick buildings on the other side that have ground-level retail below a few stories of apartments.

Right now there is development taking place all around in the area but this is really the missing centrepiece of it all as it is supposed to have ground-level retail on a pedestrian street with shops, restaurants and cafés.

We’re still waiting.
