I second that opinion. The design to me isn't that great and the integration with the church is pretty poor. There's a pretty big contrast between both and the building just squeezes it from 2 sides.

Very strange project. I've driven past it many times and it simply doesn't do anything for me. The new building and the old church are a complete mismatch!

Yeah. It's like a nice public building (university?), not a residential project. There's something off.

Still happy with it. They went above and beyond in preserving the Church, which is great. Just think that red brick and glass might have meshed better with St. Charles.

It will be retail. They are hoping to attract a couple of restaurant/cafe tenants and a couple of eclectic artsy type stores. I know this because I almost rented one of the units to open a store for my pre-pandemic employer. Those meetings were at least three years ago and they claimed it would all be 'open very soon'.

I think it's a cool juxtaposition! I welcome this project for it's uniqueness in a city that hates uniqueness.

Cool, thanks for the info! I'll be moving to the Beechwood area at the end of summer and look forward to seeing what they eventually do with that space.

Is there anything happening yet in the former church?

What would the space in the last photo be used for? Or could be used for?

It just looks like a deadzone to me as it stands now.

I think the idea is to host farmers markets. Would be nice to have a central water feature, or at least an art piece or statue.

Space for 12 farmers' market stalls and a restaurant patio.

Now we just need community to come together to make the farmers' market happen.

Isn't there already a weekly market in Beechwood?

Yup. Happens every summer and fall. Right now in New Edinburgh park, formerly on the Vanier side close to St Charles. And there’s an online shop you use in winter with pickup in nearby parks.

Thanks for the info. Looking to move the Market to St. Charles, or start up a new Market?

There's been a few live music sessions there as well when i've passed by. I think they're going for a "town square" feel for the area, which i welcome

It looks Scandinavian...not a bad thing, just a very high contrast to the other buildings in the neighborhood...

I applaud them for thinking outside the box and not using charcoal brick, but this has to be one of the UGLIEST new buildings in Ottawa. Completely botched the use of materials and colours. The lines are all off, the glazing is brutal, the scales are out of whack. Just horrific design here. It’s like the designer had no comprehension whatsoever and was way over their head. But again, kudos for trying something different.
