Six years after purchasing the former home of the Catholic archdiocese in Vancouver, Amacon is moving forward with plans to redevelop the property at Cambie and Robson with a residential tower and hotel.

Amacon has filed a development application for the property at 150 Robson, with a design by GBL Architects.

The design, which we first saw in 2017, has been refined, with less glazing on the tower and a façade of cementitious panels in an ivory finish. The architectural expression of the hotel building has been simplified as well.

Surprised that they cut down the street trees.
The ones on Beatty would have been mangled due to the pruning
for the wires above, but the Roson ones were nice.

Didn't know about this one. Was excited to see the mention of a new dedicated hotel tower rising only to see it has been converted into residential. Vancouver's severe lack of hotel room stock lives to see another day.

This project has not changed since it was first proposed. There's a condo tower, and a 107 bed hotel which is in the restored heritage building, and a 6 storey block on the corner of Beatty and Robson.

There are proposals for at least three more hotel towers Downtown, on West Pender, Seymour, and now Granville. Onni are also proposing to switch their rental tower on Seymour, Level, to hotel use. There's also hotel conversions of an office on Burrard, office space on Smithe, and a new build hotel on Keefer in Chinatown. Those can be developed more quickly, (two are already underway).

Movement! As someone that is wholly unfamiliar with construction/demolition processes. Could someone explain the purpose function of the metal frame being erected? It doesn't look like it is going to be permanent so just, a structure to support the demolition of sorts?

Correct - to support the heritage brick facade before and while excavation takes place inside.
I can't recall if the building insides will be demolished or retained.

Here's an extreme example in Toronto where the building is being braced on the inside.

Demolished - there's going to be underground parking. But they're retaining the brick facades on all four sides, which isn't always the case.

Heritage Designation of the Facades of the Northern Electric Company Building to be maintained as part of the new form of development.
Three (3) of the existing four (4) facades to be maintained while the fourth (4th) facade (eastern side) will be demolished and reconstructed.

Nothing speacial about that side anyways, as it would have been designed to abutt a neighbouring building.

They've already removed the brick skin on that side, presumably to storage.

Yeah, I meant in terms of detailing - cornice line, windows, etc.
