I've yet to see Surrey's skyline in any thread other than a dedicated surrey one. I think it's time to get out the camera and see what I can get.

That is a real cool pic of Metrotown with the Lions Gate in the foreground.

You never see people on the sidewalks in Mississauga pictures, seems more like a vertical suburb than a true urban area. Hopefully with more towers that will start to change.

It doesn't look like there's any street level retail at all, which could be why nobody is walking along the streets. I know there's that big mall, but is there any retail high streets at all in DT Mississauga?

There should be coffee shops, restaurants and bars at street level at least. I bet most of those condo towers are townhomes at the base instead of retail...

The scale of "downtown" Mississauga is off. The blocks are way, way too large. The buildings up close look like buildings with elephantiasis. The roads are also too big to inspire much pedestrian activity.

Yeah, I think that all condos should have retail at their base, makes for a much livelier and interesting street.

The new towers are almost all being built with street level retail. The downtown area which is being built up is west of Square One. It'll take some time for this to come to fruition, but the city is working on it. The city was planned incorrectly. There were "true" downtowns in place pre amalgamation.. ie) Streetsville and Port Credit.. but it was decided that Square one which geographically is the "Centre" of the city is where the new city centre should be built. Having started off as a sleepy Toronto suburb, I don't think anyone anticipated the population to explode at such a rapid rate.

As for density, I completely agree. Because the roadways are so wide the city is limited to a certain extent. That said, with several more towers in either sales, under construction or proposed, the density should improve.

I have tremendous civic pride and still think Mississauga is a great place, as do most Mississaugans. More urbanity is definitely needed to achieve a big city feel. As Canada's sixth largest city, you certainly to get the feel it's as big as it is.

Always happy to see some Mississauga love though.. keep the pics coming. The city landscape is changing fast.

I'd love to see 'alleyway' development between condos in Mississauga.

The roads are way too wide, but I see no serious need for street level retail if the mall can provide all that's needed. If more retail is needed the vast road centric vistas say to me that internal podium malls would be better.

By far my biggest issue with new developments is how they do retail. They only attract doctor's offices and nail salons, now and forever. The are 4 towers in the Absolute block, with probly close to 2000 residents, so there is a strong customer base fort the street level retail to draw from. But as usual the storefronts are generic and the sidewalk is too narrow for the wide street it fronts. The developer didn't even try.
