The only description with this photo (other than the 1/19/34 date) is "Carl Laemmle, Sr., presenting piece of birthday cake to
Carl Laemmle, Jr.". However, I believe the guy in the cowboy hat is western star Ken Maynard.

In 1934, Maynard and his then-wife Mary were living at 315 S. Las Palmas Avenue.

Maynard tripped on a step in 1971 ("I was sober, too.") and injured a leg. He died in 1973.
