Wollongong is the central Local Government Area of Metropolitan Wollongong. The area comprises Australia's 9th largest metropolitan area, and 10th largest urban centre.
The city is located 82 kilometres south of Sydney located between the Pacific coast to the west and the Illawarra escarpment to the east.
Metropolitan Wollongong consists of the City of Wollongong, City of Shellharbour, and Municipality of Kiama. It measures 684 km², with a population of 276155 (2006).
