The 2 vids on the old Union Bank bldg at 8th & Hill St both ran in late 2004...I vaguely recall watching the one filmed by Howser of KCET when it first aired, but now realize his tour dates back over 18 yrs...almost 2 decades ago! I feel old. The bldg to the left is another long vacant property, the garfield bldg. The vid below on that bldg was posted 13 yrs ago, yet today it's still vacant with tagging all over its walls. Another example of how bldg owners or investors sit on their properties for yrs or choose to finally clean & fix them up, or finally build something on vacant land.

^ The rooftop decks in LA tend to be more welcoming than similar areas on top of bldgs in other cities, esp cities where the weather for more months may be colder, cloudier, rainier, snowier.

It should be over 300 feet tall.

Today's Los Angeles Times has an article about commercial landlords offering amenities to lure and keep tenants in the age of WFH/hybrid work schedules.

Some of the interesting tidbits in the article: first, some 20% of office space in Los Angeles County is not leased. Second, the article covers what Brookfield is doing to lure/keep tenants in its downtown properties such as art displays and music programming). Third, the article also checks in on Silverstein Properties' redo of the lobby and tenant-only spaces in Library Tower ("US Bank Tower"), including softening up the lobby and common spaces to be more informal and inviting, providing both public and tenant-only food and drink amenities, etc. Finally, the Water Garden complex in Santa Monica (local home to Amazon, Oracle and other tech giants) actually increased its occupancy over the last year, to 86%.

then & now, before & after....I like tracking how dtla has changed through the yrs. Because of things like crime, taxes, homelessness, rental rates, local govnt, politics in 2023, I've seen comments of how LA today is worse than it was in the past. But if LA...dtla...isn't in the best shape in the 2020s, it also wasn't in ideal shape in 1976 or over 50 yrs ago either. Example: The Tinker toy parking lot sat at 1st St & Grand since the late 1960s & was still there until as recently as late 2018...

Another before & after. Newer projs like this one are fairly modest in scale...certainly not a super tall...but it has brought life to dtla in a way that others projs may not. This gym is in the shadow of city hall & is located on a stretch of LA St between 2nd & 3rd that used to be quite dead on both sides.

I don't think this NIMBY appeal will work, but if it does--wow. Construction at 520 Mateo would be completely halted.

This is so extremely frustrating, because these proposal should have been approved by-right, but are only in this situations because councilman can insert themselves in this process to either approve (or too often disapprove) projects in their district.

It would be absolutely tragic if 520 Mateo were to be halted after all the time + progress they've made on it.

Hard to imagine there's a legitimate path forward for them blocking construction of a residential tower the size and magnitude/significance of 520 Mateo that is already well under construction. Especially with the housing shortage/crisis already going on. LA/CA is under immense pressure to build more housing and halting construction would be asking for a deluge of criticism all around the city, state and country.

I've long noticed that 'derisive' tone too....it makes me think of a person, native to LA, who told me yrs ago that dtla wouldn't have fallen apart if it were near the ocean instead of inland. But she didn't consider an area like pasadena, which is even further away from the coast than dtla is. Yet Pasadena has been one of socal's better rated hoods, originally judged right along with santa monica as a more walkable & revitalized urban setting. But more of the land in pasadena has always been nicely developed, whereas too much of the land in hoods throughout LA haven't. So some of the 'derisive' is due to the city of LA taking so long to get areas like dtla improved & cleaned up. No thanks to ppl like the guy running the AIDS Foundation.

Oh it’s possible. They filed a suit on the Sunset+Gordon tower while it was Under construction and the verdict didn’t come until after the building was finished and occupied with tenants. They had to move all those people out and the building sat empty for a 3+ years in the middle of the 2010’s
