Tower crane plans have been filed. Supposedly they've got a hotel signed on. This one is getting closer to construction.

Site Prep/demo has restarted in the past two weeks as well. The buildings on the 3+ acre site were demo'ed in 2016 for the previous project proposed for the site but the building foundations were left in place. They are now removing the remaining foundations.

The site plan revision appears close to approval. The "final" elevations were released this week:

What a time to be alive watching Austin build its first 1,000 footer. Not to many cities outside NYC and Chicago can claim that.

The US actually has quite a few cities with 1k foot buildings outside of NYC and Chicago.

Philly, Houston, LA, SF, Atlanta... Soon Miami, Austin and maybe Seattle

Only China has more supertall cities

But agreed, great time to be alive!

That's true, of course. Still, to the layperson, they're not going to know what other cities have them. And the conversation about skyscrapers usually leads to talk about New York and Chicago. I've seen it here many times where people talk about the "Manhattanization" of Austin or that neighborhood or block or street. It's hilarious, though, and I always get a kick out of comparing Austin to New York and showing them the number of skyscrapers New York has compared to Austin and that there is no comparison. And if there's no comparison of Austin to New York then even those other cities which only have one or two supertalls themselves, aren't really comparable to New York or Chicago.

Here's a list of cities in the US with buildings over 700 feet. I'm including cities with buildings over 700 feet that are under construction even if they haven't reached that height yet.

New York - 82 - Supertalls - 20
Chicago - 30 - Supertalls - 7
Houston - 12 - Supertalls - 2
Los Angeles - 9 - Supertalls - 2
Miami - 7
Philadelphia - 7 - Supertalls - 1
Atlanta - 5 - Supertalls - 1
Dallas - 5
San Francisco - 5 - Supertalls - 1
Jersey City - 4
Seattle - 3
Boston - 3
Denver - 3
Minneapolis - 3
Charlotte - 2
Cleveland - 2
Pittsburgh - 2
Atlantic City - 1
Austin - 1
Detroit - 1
Indianapolis - 1
Mobile - 1
Oklahoma City - 1

US - 189
US excluding New York and Chicago - 77
Texas - 18

New York - 82
Illinois - 30
Texas - 18
California - 14
Pennsylvania - 9
Florida - 7
Georgia - 5
New Jersey - 5
Colorado - 3
Massachusetts - 3
Minnesota - 3
Washington - 3
North Carolina - 2
Ohio - 2
Alabama - 1
Indiana - 1
Michigan - 1
Oklahoma - 1

Meh. I think the 984 foot threshold is a lame number. I've never understood why it isn't 1,000 other than because it's a nice round 300 meters. Comcast Center is also 10 feet shy of 984 feet. I added them, but again, meh.

Most of the world measures in meters, that's generally why. Americans just have to be different

Building heights aren't cool unless they have commas.

Yeah I personally use 300 meters myself for the benchmark of a supertall.

There are 7.8 billion people in this world and 7.5 billion of them live in countries where they use meters.

These days I think supertall = 400+ meters. 300 meters is just a very tall building.

I'm not trying to undermine the excitement of Austin's new tallest but just thinking on a global scale.
