Bearing in mind the SSP drawing database isn't 100% accurate, I had a look around USA cities to see 150 metre+ construction activity:

US cities: 150m+ u/c

NYC has 16 150m u/c (mind you 4 are supertalls incl 270 Park avenue soaring to 423m)

Miami has 6 u/c (tallest is 254.2m)
Austin has 5 u/c (tallest is 258.5)
Chicago has 4 u/c (tallest is 295.4 m - 4.6 metres shy of supertall)
L.A. has 4 u/c (tallest is 231.6m)
Philadelphia has 2 u/c (tallest is 189m)
Houston has 2 u/c (tallest is 224m)

Dallas has 0 u/c (for a very long time)
Seattle has 0 u/c (a couple that are a few metres short of 150m)
San Francisco has 0 u/c

So 39 towers 150m+ u/c (incl. 2 supertalls and 1 more a stupid metre short ;-)... will just have to suffice for now I guess.

Oh wait ... if we include the 150+ in the suburbs (Missie has 7 u/c, Vaughan has 6 u/c)... oh never mind, who needs them.

The diagrams page is not the best source (although probably the most convenient). Austin has 12 projects u/c 150 m+ The tallest is 311 m.

On the topic of the 'conspiracy' to suppress proposals to just below the benchmarks of tall building categories, I have the following thoughts (based on 30+ years in the development industry):

Most developers, architects and planners aren't driven by the specific height categories that skyscraper geeks get obsessed with, even if they are geeks themselves and are actually aware of the categories. At best, they might be concerned about producing the tallest building in their locality and the 'prestige' and marketing strategy of achieving that goal.

Building height and size are usually determined by far more pragmatic concerns. There is a cost / benefit ratio to consider when trying to meet pro forma goals. Larger / taller buildings cost more to construct, so there typically is a point of diminishing returns, especially if a taller building triggers a regulation that adds cost to the proposal. For example, zoning by-laws, density bonus regulations, inclusionary housing requirements etc. may be based on a height / bulk threshold. Similarly, building and fire codes often categorize building types based on height and area. For instance, buildings greater than 400 feet (122 m) have increased requirements for fire fighting provisions and exiting requirements, so a building 399 feet tall is more cost effective than one that is 400. Also, building heights are often determined by the materials used and their available dimensions and to some extent the proportions of architectural elements. Even among skyscraper geeks who care about such things, the benchmarks can differ. In the US, geeks are more concerned about reaching 500 feet (or 600, 700, etc.) as opposed to 150 meters, and 1,000 feet rather than 300 m for a supertall. So as much as it is fun to categorize buildings based on round numbers, the people who make the actual decisions on the height of a building are usually basing those decisions on other criteria.

^^ sweet... one long pull back from the skyline, across the islands (The Island), and for those not from the city, you can see the huge Lower Don Lands (see posts above) on the right side of frame near the end of the video.

One day all that sandy brown on the right will be as green and blue as the islands.

We're lucky.

We're lucky.
We are spoiled here in Toronto. Soon we'll catch up in TO to the total skyscrapers completed and u/c in Chicago. Of course, some people are now saying that the bottom is dropping out, and it's all doom and gloom. I don't believe it. We survived the pandemic, and even a few major towers that got canceled are back on again.

I think the demand is so high, and there are so many factors working in favor of things continuing, and we will see new towers u/c before too long. I'm not an expert on the market at all, but I'm optimistic that things will pick up before too long, even if they do slow down a bit for a while.

*Love the gold/bronze vertical trims framed by black. My favourite colour combo (in part because of our province-wide baseball (fastball) championship team was wearing those colours... my Dad paid for new uniforms to replace the puke green ones we wearing;-).

Alias | 149.5m | 45s | Madison Group | Teeple Architects l site prep

*Speaking of colour, will Madison keep any Teeple-designed colour promises here (after breaking them all with “Nobu”)? Specifically, the great gold and black combo that I mentioned above.

Niagara Falls:

Loretto development l 225m l 60s l 3Bridges Properties l Approved

Just approved last week, 60 storey (225 metres), 45 storey (190 metres) and 39 storey (145 metres) towers with about 1,000 residential units and 258 hotel rooms.

Appropriately tacky for the Falls... since no-one buys real-estate in The Falls, I’m guessing 999 of 1,000 purchasers here will be thinking “hmm… Airbnb!”.

T-Dot really does little bridges well.

Some early pics of the new arch bridge (120 metres clear-span) where the new Ontario Line crosses the Don River.

Not as pretty as the *Humber Bay pedestrian arch bridge, but carrying a much bigger load.

The oh so clever diamond logo (and fonts)… that is oh so unreadable more than a block away. The graphic designers got paid way too much for this goofed-up brand make-over.

Even the giant logo adorning the podium is iffy on the readability scale unless you are standing next to it.

Did I mention the logo redesign sucks?

The angled diamond curtainwall of CIBC Square is known for its many moods... haven't seen this one before.

8 Elm | 218.2m | 68s | Reserve Properties | IBI Group l pre-construction

Some stunning new renderings of 8 Elm… I've included most of the new eye candt

Interestingly, this one now has a celebrity spin with Simu Liu (Marvel’s “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” and years on the Canuck sitcom Kim’s Convenience”) joining the project (design consultant I think).

“Nobu” has Robert De Niro as co-owner and Reserve Properties got Pharrell Williams involved with the design of “Untitled Toronto”… but 8 Elm has a superhero.

8 Elm will be really nice if the materials used are as reflective - and bronze-colored - as the renderings indicate. If they value engineer it to be more matte grey, it will end up like Nobu - a bit disappointing. Still nice to see some height come up directly around Dundas Square.

There is also a 300m tower under construction across the street from this tower
