Thanks ChrisLA.

And now just getting home, feeling a little inebriated (it's wearing off), I thought I'd post pics of a dinner out in South Pasadena. I tried getting pics of people making funny faces, but it didn't turn out quite like I wanted it to.

So... dinner and locals.

Given the fact that my wife and I welcomed our first child into the world 10 weeks ago, your photos of going out to eat/drink around the LA area are making me insanely jealous! Taking mini day trips to the small towns of the SGV is definitely something we've done in the past. We even took the Gold Line one time out to its furthest reaches, just to see what that's like. Ended up going to Congregation Ale House in Azusa to celebrate reaching the end of the line.

LA definitely has a lot of street art, which makes it all the more colorful.

Congrats to you both on your newborn! If it weren't for this pandemic, I'd have suggested a very kid and baby-friendly pub in South Pas, conveniently near the Gold Line---which hasn't been open since the start of the pandemic. I don't know if it'll ever reopen again. The owner was kind of a jerk in my opinion, anyway.

I didn't even know Congregation Ale had an Azusa location, I only knew of the ones in Pasadena and Long Beach---both of which, coincidentally, are also within short walking distances from Metro stations.

How do you not gain weight eating out with carby foods and beer/cocktails all the time? Also doesn't that hit your budget hard? I do keto diet and eat only one meal a day to stay super lean at 41. Do you do intermittent fasting or just stay really strict and these pics you take are on "cheat days".

Do you have a certain amount of money budgeted for eating out. I guess to spend more money on health supplements than eating out.

I'd guess one, or some combination of the following three:

1) Has a naturally high metabolism
2) Exercises a lot to offset the intake
3) Eats super healthy a lot of the time and is only showing us the indulgences

Great set of photos. I love living in LA. I lived around the country and this city is my favorite. BTW what is that green drink? It looks so good.

Yup. Monrovia, Covina and Glendora have all done a pretty great job preserving their mini-CBDs and surrounding neighborhoods' original housing stock.

Arcadia and Alhambra tho... ehh lets just say their CBDs are pretty much chain centric and the surrounding neighborhoods are mostly 50s-90s apartments and townhomes.

My partner and I are the proverbial DINKs, I guess---and we don't really spend money on material things. We don't have expensive cars, clothes or TVs or anything like that... we like to spend money on experiences, I guess. We have no kids to pass anything down to... so...

And we have a bad habit: We like to eat out. When California "locked down" again the week of Thanksgiving to the end of January, we missed eating out... hehe and saved some money in the process. And since outdoor dining was allowed again, we've really been going to town!

Ethnic restaurants are also quite affordable. We really only splurge once or twice a month.

I actually calorie-count. I'm able to keep my daily caloric intake to about 1100 calories per day. I often skip breakfast, and my lunches during the work week are very light. I don't like to eat heavy meals in the middle of the day. And my dinners are often light too, with very little carbs, though I don't eliminate carbs altogether. I like whole grains, like corn. I eat a lot of quinoa, which I love. And then on the weekends, I splurge, but not too much, hehe, though sometimes I can go overboard, like last Saturday I did.

I actually eat a lot of salads, too. In that one "What are you eating?" thread where I post pictures of my food, you can see that I eat a lot of salads. I used to want to try the keto diet thing, but isn't it red meat intensive? I used to have issues with cholesterol, so I didn't think the keto thing would be good for me. I basically only occasionally eat red meat now; I usually eat chicken and fish. Lots more veggies than I used to, too. And nuts. They say proteins take longer to digest, hence a lot of it makes you feel full longer. So they say.

I don't know about the metabolism; I feel it's slowed down as I've gotten older, as it does with most people. I do try to exercise; I don't have a gym membership, but I like to take long walks, and in the mornings I'll do simple cardio like jogging in place for 10 minutes and/or a hundred jumping jacks, just to get the blood flowing and some calories burning. I tend to take the stairs and not the elevator, unless of course it's more than 5 floors or something, and sometimes to the annoyance of my partner, when parking in a huge parking lot, I tend to park far, which forces me/us to walk, but I do that not necessarily because I want to walk more, but because it makes my car less likely to get dinged, not that I drive a fancy car, but I definitely do not drive a raggedy car. .

Thanks pwright. I really enjoy your photos too, you're a great photographer. And yes, I love living in LA too.

That green drink is called a Pinchazo Margarita, which contains tequila/mezcal, fresh juiced cactus, organic agave, and lime. That restaurant is Padre in Long Beach, which I highly recommend! They have great food and cocktails. And it has a great vibe, and I love the mix of people that go there.

I agree. Their town centers each have their own character and vibe.

I will say, though, that pre-pandemic, anyway, Alhambra's downtown was quite the local nightspot with some bars and such.
