Northern Virginia – Warrenton, Manassas, and Leesburg

Last month I had work training in a far southwestern suburb of DC and as a result I had a rental vehicle. Having a vehicle while in the DC area is a rarity for me (I lived there for 7 years without one), so I took the opportunity to visit a few of the old historic downtowns of Warrenton, Manassas, and Leesburg.

1. Warrenton (Founded 1810)

But only heading back for a short time as I’ll be relocating back to DC in June for a new work opportunity. Hope you enjoyed this little tour of a few of Northern Virginia’s older historic communities!

Nice photos!

Of the three towns, which one did you like the most?

Thanks! I prefer Leesburg the most. It's the largest of the three and just feels more substantial than the other two... though Manassas has a VRE/Amtrak station downtown which is a nice feature. Leesburg no longer has rail service into DC (though there is bus service to the Ashburn Metrorail station approx. 10 miles away on the newly extended silver line).

Nice photos, thank you for posting. I have driven through Manassas and Warrenton several times on the way to the Shenandoahs but never visited the downtown areas. The downtowns look quite nice but they are surrounded by some of the worst pave-and-destroy auto-oriented sprawl.

Leesburg is very nice and, as you show in your photos, it has the W&OD bike trail, which goes from Arlington out to Purcellville.

The wineries in the region are also great. They're not Napa or Sonoma but they are a nice day trip to visit.

Leesburg area is also an antiquing paradise. I've found a few midcentury gems there.

Charlottesville wine region is some of the best on the East coast.

I think I like Warrenton the best out of these three as shown here, I have never visited them.

Yes, the bike trail is a nice feature for Leesburg!

As for the wineries, The Winery at Bull Run was my first NoVA winery experience and I thought it was decent. I've been to a few wineries down around Charlottesville and they're pretty good. I'm looking forward to visiting more wineries, especially since I have good friends in the Charlottesville area who I can visit more often once I'm back living in DC next month.

It's a nice little city. Population is a little over 10,000, so it's quite a bit smaller than the other two cities I visited (Leesburg being the biggest near 50,000 and Manassas not too far behind at over 40,000).

Nice pictures! I have explored Warrenton and Manassas extensively, and have been in Leesburg, but didn't explore it. Of the three Warrenton was my favorite.

Northern Virginia has a lot of great county seats and independent cities. Fairfax is also apparently really nice, and I'm hoping I have a day to get down and explore it some time soon.
